Choosing the right hunting blade is more important than many people think. The difference between having a pocket knife or steel blade hunting knife that you are satisfied with and having a hunting knife that fails to deliver the power and strength you need, can be the difference between enjoying your hunting season and loathing it.

There are several different types of hunting blades that a person can choose from, and depending on what your individual preferences are you may be able to make use of more than one blade style. The four main blade types for a tactical knife or hunting knives are the drop point blade, the clip point blade, the skinning blade, and the caping blade. All four of these hunting blade types are very different and serve very different purposes. Depending on what type of hunter is in the market for such a blade, it would be wise to invest your money in the type that is best fit for your hunting style. In some cases, you may want to consider purchasing multiple blade types for different hunting situations.

The Drop Point Blade Hunting Knives

The drop point blade is for the serious, hard-core hunters out there. This is the knife that is made for those that hunt big game, like deer or elk. They often have a thick, durable steel blade and it takes a slight curve so as to allow the hunter the cut through meat and peel off skin by using the edge of the blade and not the front of the blade or its point. The more efficiently a blade allows a hunter to skin an animal, the more meat is left over and that makes the game even more valuable. Also, the drop point can help to more efficiently clean an animal as well. The drop point is the most versatile hunting blade by far, allowing a hunter to do more things with ease and efficiency than any of the other hunting knife blades on the market today.

The Clip Point Blade Hunting Knives

The clip point blade is another one of the popular hunting knife blades that the more experienced hunters use. The clip point blade is a thin, flat blade with a more defined point than the drop point blade. For those hunters out there who are in the market for a tactical knife that will not only help them during the hunting season, but also be a useful tool for cutting ropes or branches, the clip point blade would be a good investment. The clip point blade is perfect for the hunter-camper, who has other things to take care of with his knife besides dealing with game and only wants to have to carry one. Although the clip point is not as efficient with certain things as the drop point is, the two knives have their own two uses.

The Skinning Knife

Skinning knives are other popular hunting knives, although they are not nearly as multipurpose as some of the other tactical knives on the market. Skinning knives are just for that, removing the skin of a game animal from the meat. Skinning takes a certain type of blade in order for the meat to be as well preserved as possible. If you find that you lose a lot of your game during the skinning process, you may want to consider purchasing a skinning knife in addition to a more tactical blade.

The Caping Knife

While many hunters argue that it should not require its own knife, a caping knife is the perfect solution for those hunters out there that like to kill game for trophies. Caping knives are made small knives with thin blades designed specifically for skinning animals for preservation purposes, such as mounting. The caping knife allows the job to be conducted safely and as smoothly as possible.

Knives come in a number of forms and can be built for aesthetics as well as tactical implementation.  Choosing one may seem overwhelming, however, by knowing these types of knife blades you may be able to better prioritize your hunting knife needs.
