Whether you are a serious bicyclist or a hobbyist, you should always be prepared and keep safety first. Just as you would not leave for a ride without some water on your bike, you shouldn't leave without a flashlight. Many people overlook packing a flashlight because they are sure that they will not be out after dark, or they do not want to carry any more than what is necessary on their bike.
With the advances in LED technology, there is no excuse for not having a light on your bicycle. These lights are affordable, tough and compact. You can mount an LED bike chip on your bike, and it will not take up any more room than your front reflector. A small LED torch can produce enough light to change a tire after dark, but fit easily into a small pocket behind your bicycle seat. You do not refuse to wear a helmet because it is too bulky, or refuse to carry a spare tube because you probably will not need it, a flashlight should be given the same importance.
Types of Bicycle Lights
There are a variety of bicycle lights to choose from. You may choose to purchase a light that connects to your bicycle, or one that can be worn as a head light. These have the advantage of providing you with a light that can be used hands free. Many of these lights can also be removed from their mount and be used as a hand held light if the need arises. A LED bike chip provides a bright, clear source of illumination.
Hand held flashlights are nice to have as well. A hand held light is normally more substantial than a light that is mounted on a bicycle or worn on the body. Most bicyclists try to keep their gear to a minimum, so will look for a compact but bright light. LED torch lights are an excellent choice. The compact size and tough body enable them to hold up to the demands of bicyclists.
The Benefits of LED
LED lights are a major improvement over the lights of the past. Traditional flashlights are very sensitive to the smallest jiggle, resulting in broken bulbs, and, of course, no light. Clearly, a traditional flashlight is not a good choice for tossing into a bicyclist's pack, or clipping to the front of your mountain bike.
The battery life and the bulb life of a LED bike flashlight are extremely long. When it is time to change the batteries in your LED flashlight, they are often AAA batteries, which are much easier to carry with you than the C or D batteries that many traditional flashlights use.
There is little chance of getting caught off guard with a dead flashlight if you choose an LED light. The light put out by a LED flashlight is bright and clear. As the battery weakens, the light put out by the LED gradually diminishes, but this occurs over hundreds of hours, not overnight, leaving you plenty of time to replace your batteries.
Who Should Have a Light on Their Bicycle
Anyone that rides a bicycle should carry a light. Even if you do not plan on being outside after dark, accidents and delays happen. While you may feel that you are visible with your bicycle reflectors, they are no comparison for the light provided by a LED bike chip. If you end up injured, you will be grateful to have a strobing light that you can use to draw attention to yourself, and get help.
LED flashlights are an excellent way to stay safe on the bike trail. Even if you leave and return in the daylight, there are a variety of ways that a light will come in handy. Fog and sudden rainstorms can make visibility poor. In these types of weather conditions it can be difficult for motorists to see you even with reflectors, because of the lack of natural light.
There is no reason to neglect carrying all the necessary safety equipment on your next bike ride. A powerful LED bike light is affordable and easy to carry with you with little effort.
