Having an emergency lantern on hand, or maybe even more than one, is an excellent strategy to help you feel confident that you will not be without light in the event of an emergency. An emergency is any abrupt unexpected crisis, typically involving an element of danger, and necessitates swift and decisive action.

The potential types of situations that can create emergencies are almost limitless but, the tools and resources one needs to respond to most kinds of emergencies can be anticipated and prepared for in advance. No matter whether an emergency is caused by a particular type of natural disaster, a house fire, or a terrorist act, there are emergency supplies that can be gathered and kept in accessible places to be pulled out and used at a moment’s notice.

A very important piece of emergency equipment is a tool for providing light. Humans are built to have more efficient vision in the light, unlike some animals and insects that have better vision in the dark. When the light source is limited or non-existent for humans, their ability to respond to emergencies is greatly impaired.

It doesn’t matter if all of the emergency medical supplies in the world are available during an emergency, unless there is the ability to see what is going on, it is difficult to accurately assess medical situations. When an assessment of injuries is compromised by darkness, the ability to apply emergency medical procedures is also compromised. Often it is a matter of life and death in a medical emergency and without the aid of an emergency lantern or light source, the emergency situation can not be dealt with effectively or efficiently.

The same is true for search and rescue operations. It is very hard to conduct such emergency procedures in the dark. Many times dealing with the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster means looking for survivors at night or in the darkness caused by searching underground or through rubble piles. Being able to see what you are dealing with increases the degree of safety for both the rescuers and the victims.

Although a couple of examples of emergency situations have been described above, there is no way to include examples of every possible type of situation that may turn into an emergency. Albeit to say, no matter what the source of the emergency, if there is no light available during and following the emergency, the outcome is likely to be less satisfactory than it needs to be.

With this said, it is critical that emergency action plans be developed and as a part of the plan lists of emergency supplies and tools be developed. The supplies and tools need to be collected and stored in a place that is accessible. Every place of business and every family or individual should think about what they would do in the case of an emergency. A good emergency disaster plan will include a list of supplies and tools that can be utilized no matter the cause of the emergency.

Appropriate emergency lighting should be on everyone’s emergency planning list. In order to determine appropriateness of emergency lanterns, purchase decisions need to be made after knowing and understanding about the various kinds of emergency lanterns on the market.

There are many emergency lantern options to consider. Emergency lanterns come in a variety of models and types including: 12 LED light battery, 20 LED lantern battery, Windup LED, lantern and radio combinations, lantern, radio and television combinations, kerosene lanterns, and solar powered lantern etc. Each of these types of emergency lanterns has individual strengths and limitations such as:

LED emergency lanterns are super bright and provide intense light for maybe close-up work. LED emergency lights are also good for distributing light into the distance.

Battery powered emergency lanterns can be bought which use rechargeable batteries so, the cost of batteries is reduced.

Windup or crank emergency lanterns can be used even when the batteries are dead or you don’t even need them.

Solar emergency lanterns are powered by small solar panels so they can be powered up without the use of batteries. Most of these come with not only a solar panel but also an adaptor for a car and a home adaptor.

Emergency lanterns can be used at times other than emergencies so this makes them a flexible resource to have around. If using an emergency lantern for things other than emergencies, be sure that when you put it way after use that you have recharged batters, solar panels and/or replaced low batteries.
