Situations That Require a High-Powered LED Light
Ever since their introduction as a practical electronic device in 1962, LED lights have been used for a variety of purposes. They can be found in everything from personal electronic devices to toys and from tools to automobiles. They come in a variety of shapes, strengths, and colors, and the technology that is used to produce them has advanced greatly over the past few decades. But are there situations in which a high-powered LED light would be more useful than a traditional light source, such as a filament-based bulb? There sure are. Let's take a look at a few of these potential LED-demanding situations.
First things first. It is important to know just what makes an LED light any different from a traditional bulb. LED stands for light-emitting diode. Light is created when the semiconductor diode that makes up the LED is forward biased, or, turned on; electrons recombine with holes in the diode to release energy in the form of light. The color of the light is determined by the semiconductor's energy gap, but red, green and blue LEDs are fairly common. Using LEDs instead of traditional light sources is advantageous for a number of reasons. LEDs use less energy, have a longer lifetime, are smaller and faster, and stand up to wear-and-tear better.
High-powered LEDs, or, HPLEDs, are now being sold as alternatives to incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen bulbs in lamps and flashlights. Here are just a few examples of when having a sturdy, long-lasting HPLED might be better than having a traditional bulb.
Some of the increasingly more common uses for HPLEDs are in the areas of law enforcement and public safety. HPLEDs are being used in flashlights and search lights to better aid police and fire crews when searching for criminals or victims of fire, flood, or other disasters. The bright, narrow beams allow police and fire fighters to search from a greater distance, and the durability of the HPLED bulbs themselves means a bulb won't break in the middle of a chase or crucial rescue operation.
Another use for HPLEDs that is becoming more prevalent is during outdoor recreation. HPLED lanterns are replacing gas and filament-bulb lanterns as the new standard in hiking, camping, and cave exploration. A good HPLED can help lead someone back to camp from a distance, signal to search and rescue workers if someone becomes lost, and help keep dangerous forest animals away from food and supplies. And because of their long lives, HPLED lanterns and flashlights can be used time and time again.
Power outages are another example of when a HPLED would be appropriate. If a storm or natural disaster leaves you without electricity, you will definitely want to have a few HPLED lanterns or flashlights on hand. Attempting to fix an electrical problem by yourself can be dangerous, and doing so in the dark can be just foolish. Keeping a HPLED lantern somewhere familiar and safe will mean less time you and your family will spend in the dark.
Applications for HPLED lights and lanterns don't always have to be dull. LEDs and HPLEDs have been used more and more for stage and arena lighting, creating fantastic, colorful, and fast-moving light displays for theater productions and concerts. And because of their size, light displays made with LEDs are often more intricate and impressive. HPLEDs can also be used as outdoor lighting around the home, helping you feel safer and more secure where you live.
While HPLED lights aren't as common as regular LEDs, finding the right HPLED for you doesn't need to be a trying experience. There are a number of companies dedicated to bringing you just the right LED or HPLED light or lantern. Shopping online is a great way to find terrific buys; there are a number of online retailers that focus primarily on getting you high-quality LED and HPLED lights at rock-bottom prices. Make sure to shop around, though. You don't want to pay too much for something you can get elsewhere at a discounted price.
HPLEDs and LED lights in general have revolutionized the way people use lanterns and search lights. From parties to police work, people are turning to LEDs for all their lighting needs. And considering their size, strength, and durability, it isn't hard to see why.
