Welland, Ontario Joins Growing Number of Cities Installing LED Streetlights

On December 5, Welland, Ontario in Canada launched the first phase of its LED outdoor lighting installations. They unveiled new 47 LED luminaries in the streetlights of Fitch Street. The new LED streetlights are part of the city’s first phase contract to update its roadway lighting applications.  The work is being completed by Relume Technologies and marks the first ever LED outdoor lighting application on a full street in North America.

The new streetlights cover 2 kilometers of roadway that service resident homes, apartments, schools and a shopping center. The city has been working with Relume to create a lighting application that would serve as a full lighting fixture while still adhering to the Dark Sky compliance requirements for the city.  The company hopes to have intensity controls available for future LED lamp applications. Relume’s LED lamps utilize 90 watts of power compared to the 175 watts used by the sodium lamps currently in Welland’s city streets.

The city has been using research and surveys of the public’s opinion regarding Toronto’s LED City applications to make decisions about their own lighting changes.
