Welcome to LED Island
The first net zero energy consumption destination will be developed this Spring with the help of Philips Color Kinetics. North Dumpling, a three-acre private island off the coast of Connecticut, is scheduled to be converted entirely to LEDs using Philips as its official lighting provider. The self-sustaining island is scheduled to be unveiled to the public in the spring during a fundraiser for FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
“With increasing strain on our world’s energy resources, our goal is to make North Dumpling a small but prominent example of what can be achieved on a larger scale with today’s emerging energy-saving technologies,” said island owner and inventory Dean Kamen. Kamen has been known for is eccentricities like pushing for North Dumpling to be a separate country with its own constitution and flag. Those efforts have not yet come to fruition. He is also the inventor of the segway.
What has come to fruition however is his dream to be a net zero energy user. He will accomplish this is several ways which will include replacing incandescent lights with LEDs and better placement of those lights for maximum usefulness.
In the end, I think this will be a powerful testimony to how far LED lighting technology can go to help reduce our energy consumption in the United States and around the world. If a small island can do it, there is no reason we can’t continue to build out from there.
