Washington: Volunteers needed to Staff Elk Hunting Lands
Weyerhaeuser Co. is asking for volunteers to help staff elk hunting areas near Mt. St. Helens. Volunteers are needed to orient hunters, maintain monitor access points, and establish safety buffers between hunting parties. Provided that a sufficient number of volunteers are found, Weyerhaeueser will allow hunters to use private logging roads in their Mt. St. Helens tree farm. This is the second year the logging company has linked hunters’ access to the availability of volunteers; last year 54 people volunteered.
Sandra Jonker, regional wildlife manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife explained the program, saying “As before, the amount of timberland that will be opened to hunting will be directly proportional to the number of volunteers that sign up.’’ To participate, visit the department’s Vancouver office at 2108 Grand Blvd., or the agency online site at http://wdfw.wa.gov/volunter/sthelens_land_access.htm.
