U.S. Department of Energy Helping Prove Savings of LED Lighting

Leflector Home LightGreat report form the DOE this week on a Gateway demonstration project conducted at the Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, OR. The project is a study of commercial LED lighting usage in various locations, comparing the light source with other traditional fixtures. The report came to some great solid statistics comparing high pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires with LED light sources in the medical center’s parking garage. An existing LED version out on the market since 2007 as well as a newer model were both used in the study which was compiled by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

So what did they find out?

1. The LED fixtures used an average of 82 watts. The HPS lights used 191 watts.
2. Surveyed users felt the LEDs provided more light than the HPS sources
3. Maximum and minimum light levels were equal or greater than those of the HPS
4. Surveyed users felt the LEDS provided better light when viewed through security cameras

More tests are being done but these simple studies further the argument that funding should be put toward improving this light source to help reduce energy consumption in our nation’s cities.
