Universal Display Announced Transparent White OLED Technology
Universal Display has announced they have made great strides in the development of a transparent white OLED. This white phosphorescent OLED lighting has a power efficiency of 45 lumens / watt now but is expected to achieve up to 150 lumens / watt after more development is completed. The current prototype emits a white, energy efficient light when in use and is transparent when it is turned off. Supporters of the project believe that this very thin, transparent light source will offer a multitude of lighting design advantages in the future in addition to being a more “green” alternative to fluorescent lighting.
Speaking about the potential for such a light panel, Sidney Rosenblatt, Universal Display CFO stated, “One can imagine that these panels may someday replace standard office windows to provide lighting when day-lighting is insufficient.”
Universal Display’s research is funded, in part, by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant.
