Toshiba Unveils the Current Lightweight Laptop Champ
The release of the MacBook Air last April electrified technorati around the world. At that time, the MacBook was the only laptop offering a display lit by LEDs. Well, the MacBook’s fifteen minutes of fame have expired with Toshiba’s release of the Toshiba Portege R500-S5007V.
At just 2.4 pounds, the Portege undercuts the MacBook Air’s 3 pound weight. Moreover, Toshiba claims that the Portege’s transreflective screen allows sunlight through to light the screen. In other words, while sunbathing at the park, you won’t have to experience Green Guilt for using your laptop display– the sun will light your screen for you, allowing you to turn off the Portege’s LED backlight.
Unfortunately, the Portege’s $3000 price tag may be out of reach for many eager consumers, especially given current economic conditions. For an alternative LED mini-splurge, consider the Hollywood Moon Desk Lamp, pictured at right. Its sleek design, inspired by spotlights from cinema’s golden era, lends an air of grace to any office.
