The O2 of London gets a LED Lighting Make-Over for Olympics
Philips Electronics is using 1.8 million LED lights in its development of the new exterior display of The O2, the building formerly known as the Millennium Dome in London. The renovation is part of a multimillion pound deal between Philips and AEG Europe, the owner and operator of the O2.
The renovated O2 arena will be an official venue for the gymnastic and basketball competitions of the 2012 Olympics, holding up to 20,000 music, entertainment and sports fans.
The exterior design will be a combination of floodlighting and bright blue LED rings representing the O2 (O2 refers to the element symbol for oxygen) bubbles which will encircle the 12 masts emerging out from the dome. Additionally, Philips will provide video screens, including LED displays wrapped around the 12 external cylinders on the perimeter of the dome. Expect to see Philips heavily showcase their multimedia and lighting savvy as the inner and outer video display and lighting designs come to fruition.
