St. Louis College Students Begin Walk Across America
“For me this trip has been, since day one, about simplifying my life,” said Jonathan Fournier.
Fournier is one of four college students from St. Louis, Missouri, who have decided to walk across America as part of their senior year graduation requirement. Fournier, Matt Grant, Lauren Kirkwood, and Katelyn Minnick, will be creating a documentary of their journey from Florence, Oregon to South Carolina during the first semester of their senior year. The four Webster University students will be walking through small town America, documenting the people they meet.
The quartet does not know where they are staying each night but they set off on May 31st and are hoping that the kindness of Americans will help them complete their journey. They expect to complete the trip by December. They are packing light but are taking the necessary equipment to camp outdoors when hospitality can’t be found – flashlight, sleeping bag, extra clothes.
The group has been preparing for the trip. They are thinking of ways to stay mentally sharp as they trudge the long hours of road together. They are also stretching every day. Their goal is to walk 17 miles a day. The entire trip is 29,000 miles.
