Six-Year-Old Climbs Colorado Peaks, Hopes to Encourage Other Kids

The Currat family hopes to encourage other children to get involved in activities that promote physical fitness and challenges them. That’s why they wanted to share with others the accomplishments of their six-year-old daughter, Isabelle Currat, who has climbed up five 14,000-foot summits this past 2007 hiking season. The kindergartner from Colorado has conquered Quandary Peak, Mount Biershstadt and Mount Sherman and hopes to reach the top of all 52 “fourteeners” in Colorado before she turns 14 years old.  Now that’s an incredible goal for a girl still learning to read and write.

Isabelle’s father, Will Currat, is an active outdoorsman who has climbed rough terrain and incredible summits since he was 12. He’s encouraged Isabelle to be active and experience the beautiful wilderness around her.

“She just has the drive to make it to the summit,” said Currat of his daughter. “After she got to the first one, we expected her to sleep the whole way home. But when we got in the car, she was still so excited.”

For her sixth birthday, Isabelle asked for a Camel Bak water container. She had a hiking birthday party and invited a group of 10 friends to climb around the foothills near her hometown in Roxborough. She’ll be hitting Mount Elbert, Mount Massive and Pikes Peak next year.
