SID2007 Highlights LEDs – Next Generation Video Display Technology

We’ve reported it here on this blog (read “LED Light Bulbs More than Just Efficient”  and “LED Hitting LCD Panels”) and now the story is being told at the SID 2007 show – LED technology is the wave of the future for LCD and plasma screen displays.

According to Stewart Hough, a reporter for LEDs Magazine, every booth at this year’s event had an LCD screen utilizing LED backlights. The show, formally called the Society for Information Display (SID) 2007 Exhibition, Symposium and Conference is a technical show where electronic display manufacturers come to exhibit their latest and greatest.

As you would expect, the manufacturers spend the event promoting and debating the merits of the two prominent flat panel screen technologies – plasma and LCD. But what also creeped up in these debates was the utilization of LED backlights in LCD screens, from small laptops to large home theater displays. Up to this point LCDs used CCFL (gas-filled cold cathode fluorescent tubes) to create the primary lighting for the screen.

It’s incredible to think that a technology that started out as a simple improvement to flashlight and lantern technologies is now on the path to be incorporated into every home and office light fixture in the world.
