Ridges and Rivers Route in Virginia Opens in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area

The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area has made available a new hiking, bicycling and equestrian trail system they are calling the Ridges and Rivers Route. The seven-trail, 134 ½ mile route runs through the area, a large part of which lies within the George Washington and Jefferson national forests in Virginia.

The Mount Rogers National Recreation area is a 120,000-acre tract in the southwestern part of the state. The recreation park boasts three wilderness areas, high mountain country and more than 350 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Ridges and Rivers Route follows seven of the major trails within the area. These trails wind from Abingdon in the southwest to Pulaski in the northeast. The trail varies in difficulty from steep, rocky terrain to well-maintained roadways.

Hikers and mountain bikers should be cautioned that the route has limited road access. This means that users of the trail need to make sure they pack all of the necessary survival and first-aid materials they may need in case of emergency; there is no nearby potable water, telephone or cellular service, and rescue services around the trail way.
