Philips in France Unveils World’s First LED-Lit Office Building

Snake Moppel desk lampRoyal Philips Electronics recently made history in sustainable office lighting, as the company provided the technology to light an entire office building in Paris with LED bulbs.

Office lighting has come a long way since the 1950s, when designers suggested installing then-futuristic flourescent bulbs across wide open floor plans to reduce lighting costs. Today’s lighting experts suggest flexible ambient lighting combined with focused task lighting to increase worker comfort and efficiency. Beyond human-friendly design, LEDs are gaining in popularity because they are more efficient and sustainable than fluorescent bulbs, which can leak mercury if not disposed of properly.

The LED lighting at 100 Champs-Elysees Avenue is indeed designed to reduce overall energy costs while increasing workers’ feelings of well-being. According to WebWire, LEDs throughout the building not only provide ambient and task lighting, they also illuminate the top two glass stories of the building, transforming it into a beacon. Considering the general shift to LED bulbs, perhaps this beacon will serve to rally more converts to the sustainable lighting revolution.

If you’re hoping to lead your friends in the aforementioned revolution, try incorporating LEDs in your home office lighting design. The flexible, modern design of the snake moppel light shown above, for instance, allows the user to direct light exactly where needed, reducing both eye strain and excessive energy costs.
