Oregon Hiking: Check Out Gray Butte Trail

The Oregonian’s Ultimate Northwest magazine is now available and highlights 8 great hikes available in the Northwest according to hiking enthusiastTerry Richards. One of those great hiking vacation destinations is the Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon where the Gray Butte Trail is available just beyond the Park’s boundaries in the Crooked River National Grasslands. The hiking trail has a variety of different trailways to choose from but Richard recommends following the river upstream, climbing up to Burma Road to catch the Gray Butte Trail and hike north toward Gray Butte, a 5,108 foot summit. This trail is roughly an 8 mile roundtrip hike, perfect for an afternoon trip with some friends.

There is camping available in the nearby Smith Rock’s Park or at Skull Hollow. You can learn more about the Crooked River National Grasslands as well as other hikes in central Oregon at www.fs.fed.us/r6/centraloregon.
