Online Bowhunter Education Now Available for Those in South Dakota
Bowhunter education in South Dakota is now more accessible thanks to an online pilot program being tested. Students can take approximately 75% of the certified bow hunter education course online from the National Bowhunter Education Foundation. The remaining 25% - 4 hours of classes – is taken as a field day with certified bowhunter instructions.
All first-time bowhunters, as well as all archery elk hunters, must complete a bowhunter education course successfully.
Students interested in the online program can access the course through the S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department Web site at http://www.sdgfp.info/. The online instruction includes chapter reviews and practice tests as well as the lessons for the course. The online course costs $20 and is payable when the student is ready to take the test. Once the online course is successfully completed, a field instructor will be assigned.
At this time, the site does not speculate as to whether this service will be offered in other states. In the meantime, first-time bowhunters can take advantage of this online training to prepare for the hunting season to come. Training is imperative to safe hunting and is a pre-requisite for all hunting types. To learn more about hunting courses near you, visit your state’s fish and wildlife department website.
