OLED’s Innovative But Won’t Replace LED Lights
I was reading a recent article in the NY Times on Organic LED (OLED) application innovations and was interested in its take on OLED’s as the future of light sources. OLED lights are amazing. They, like LEDs, are highly energy-efficient and very long-lasting in comparison to traditional lights. They can also produce light in various colors making them great for design features. The big triumph with OLED lights is that the source can be made into ultra-thin, flexible sheets which widens the application potential for such a light. OLEDs are already being introduced in televisions and cell phones and nterior designers and manufacturers of home products are developing OLED lit home fixtures and accessories.
But most experts agree that this flexible, flat light application is not going to replace LED lights or traditional bulbs for that matter. OLEDs, while efficient, are still not as efficient or as long-lasting as regular LEDs. Furthermore, the light put out by OLEDs is very even and diffused. The light does not have the depth or ability to be pinpointed the way LEDs and incandescents can. This leaves applications like flashlights and even home lights requiring these types of bulbs. OLEDs will have a powerful position once it can be built more inexpensively in public lighting and even construction. But the importance of lights like LEDs does not seem to be waning anytime soon.
