New LED Light Treatment of CN Tower be Unveiled

Another landmark building is being redesigned to include thousands of exterior LED light fixtures.

The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, is both a national landmark as well as the world’s tallest freestanding tower.  The tower, which stands at 1,815 feet tall, has been fitted with 1,330 programmable color-changing LED fixtures. The new lighting design will be revealed in a light show and ceremony this Thursday, June 28.

The LED fixtures being used in the design are each about the size of shoebox. These boxes will replace the previous conventional light fixtures, pieces about the size of washing machines. The Tower authorities know their LED facts – they have told the press that the new LED lighting system is far more energy efficient and cost effective to maintain, and that the LEDs will create a vibrant Tower with more efficiency.

Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer for the CN Tower stated, “We’ve waited a long time for the right technology that would present a sustainable installation at Canada’s National Tower and this latest technological upgrade provides an energy efficient, cost effective and architecturally stunning result.”

The Tower is planned to illuminate the skyline each night from dusk until 1 a.m. along with scheduled occasional thematic programming during holidays and other events.

When the revealing ceremony photos come out, I’ll be sure to get some posted here.
