New LCD TV Backlight Using Fewer LED Lights Showcased This Week

This week, Luminus Devices and Global Lighting Technologies are showcasing a 37” LCD TV backlighting unit that uses just 21 LEDs. The demonstration can be seen at the Flat Panel Display International 2007 Conference in Yokohama, Japan.  Currently, backlighting for large LCD televisions that use standard LEDs require hundreds of individual LED light sources (read more about LEDs in LCD TV technology here). This new backlighting unit uses only seven (Luminus) PhlatLight modules made up of a single red, green and blue chip, to illuminate the large LCD screen.  To accomplish this reduction in light sources, this demo couples the light of each module into a MicroLens light guide that spreads the light across the screen.

The downside of this new backlight, from what can be gathered so far, is that the power consumption for these modules is very high, requiring a heat removal mechanism from the LED array. This downside does not really overshadow the benefits – greener technology, lower cost, and thinner design.  It is expected that this new technology will be scaled for use for bigger television screens as well.
