Luminus Devices Showcases LED Backlight Enhancements at CES
Luminus Devices showcased its latest LED backlight and projection offerings at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week. Several products at the show featured the company’s PhlatLight LED technology for large screen LCD backlights, projection televisions and some front projection projectors. Luminus also displays their own technology not yet integrated into a particular company’s LCD offerings.
The LCD TV PhlatLight LED backlight unit Luminous showed at the event had an integrated color management system that was developed along with X-Rite Inc. The backlight uses just 8 chipsets to edge-light a large screen display. It typically requires hundreds to thousands of chipsets to achieve the needed brightness and consistency with conventional LED backlight units. Since the set will require fewer LEDs, the Luminus PhlatLight will greatly reduce the cost of large-screen LCD backlighting. The edge-lighting technology also allows for thinner LCD TV designs.
Luminus, a high performance, solid state lighting solutions manufacturer also displayed a home theater front projector prototype that utilizes PhlatLight LEDS to produce over 700 ANSI lumens. The company hopes that projection system will break the 1,000 lumen barrier during 2008 development. If so, front projectors using PhlatLight would be able to include instant-on operations, Ultra-high contrast, uniform brightness, long lasting lamps and other major benefits of LED lighting technology.
