Lost Arizona Hikers Prompt Sheriff to Send Reminder about Hiking Safety
The Arizona Daily Sun reported on Tuesday that search crews found a pair of hikers Sunday who became lost near Humphreys Summit. The hikers, having remembered to bring a cell phone with them on their hike, called 911 around 7:00pm and Search and Rescue volunteers were quickly dispatched to the area. The hikers, a 32-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were hiking the summit when they meandered off the marked trail and got lost. The lost hikers built a fire to keep warm which helped the helicopter crew spot them. The hikers were found around 11:30pm that evening.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind Arizona hikers to remember the following important hiking safety tips when planning an excursion in the area:
- Review the hiking equipment, supplies and skills that will be needed for the hike you are planning
- Pack emergency signaling devices, like a long-lasting flashlight, emergency flairs or materials to build a fire with
- For strenuous hikes, be sure to be physically fit for the challenge.
- Always attempt to hike with a companion or notify someone of your complete hiking itinerary before heading out.

Make sure to be prepared as best you can with safety and survival equipment and make sure to notify others of your plans for travel and return. […]
