London’s LED Leadership

London EyeYesterday, London city officials made waves in the environmental community by announcing their intention to be the first major city to be lit entirely by LED by the year 2012.

As Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor with the UK Independent reports, Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron presented the city’s plan to begin with four experimental projects across the city. Ten more projects will finish within the year.
London city officials were prompted to switch to LED lighting to save energy and money. Not only do LED streetlights cut power usage by 40%; they also provide larger lit areas, eliminating dark areas between lights.

You can harness the efficiency of LED lights in your own home by switching to LED lights when possible. LED lights may require a larger initial investment, but they will last longer and save more energy than typical lightbulbs. For a minimalist, modern LED lighting option, check out the Large Photonium lamp, shown at left. You’re sure to save money on your electric bill with lights like this; the Photonium lamp requires only .8 watts of power, as compared to anywhere from 20 to 150 watts for the traditional floor lamp.
