LED Helmet May Halt the Demensia of Alzheimer’s Disease

Picture by Gaetan LeeIt is widely known that LEDs are good for your wallet, as they offer great energy savings over incandescent bulbs, but did you know that LEDs may also be good for your health? The latest LED medical breakthrough involves one of the most frightening possibilities of old age: Alzheimer’s Disease.

The UK Telegraph reports that a highly unusual helmet featuring 700 near infra-red light-emitting diodes appears to have halted and even reversed the dementia symptoms of Clem Fennel, the first patient to undergo this treatment. Dr. Gordon Dougal, a family doctor in England, developed the LED-helmet after seeing the effect of LED lights on cold sores. The helmet sends low levels of infrared light into the brain to stimulate neurons.  Extensive clinical tests are required before the helmet can be made widely available.
