LED Bulbs Illuminate Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Well, LED light bulbs have hit the big time (in my opinion).  This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, the one idolized by other cities and memorialized in countless Christmas movies, is going green. This year’s tree will be covered with 30,000 multi-colored, energy-efficient LED bulbs instead of the usual bulbs used for years. New York’s mayor hopes that this change to one of America’s most loved Christmas attractions will inspire millions of New Yorkers and tourists to make greener choices in their own lives.

The tree, a 84-foot-tall Norway spruce, will be covered with the 30,000 LEDs, strung on five miles of wire. The change to the more energy-saving lighting technology is expected to reduce the midtown display’s electricity consumption from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day. The daily savings is equal to the amount of electricity consumed by a typical 2,000-square-foot house in a month.

The official tree lighting ceremony will take place November 28th where it will begin illuminating and exciting visitors. The tree is lit each day from 5:30am – 11:30pm through the first week of January.

I love it. I think its a great way to show others just how easy it is to use LED lights in nearly every application.
