LED Backlit Laptop Demand May Double LED Sales
LED sales are expected to double over the next two years due to the increasing demand for laptop and TVs with LED backlighting screens, says a report from Toyoda Gosei on Bloomberg. Toyoda Gosei forecasts that the demand for energy-efficient laptops will drive up LED chip sales to over $270 million by mid-2009. Toyoda is specifically targeting TV and laptop-like products that can utilize LED backlights because they are more profitable than the smaller devices like mobile phones and handhelds that use LED screens. Is this a good indicator for the LED sales market? It is not clear. Toyoda is 43% owned by Toyota Motor Corp and generates only 10% of its revenue from LED parts. What it does tell us is that we are just beginning to tap into the various LED applications, products and services that can benefit from LED technologies. Growth of LED sales is imminent though the speed and expanse of that growth could be faster than this report even indicates.
