LED backlights to expand into large LCD displays in 5-10 years

LEDs Magazine has reported that there is a strong potential growth opportunity for LEDs in the LCD TV and laptop space in the next five to ten years. This assessment is based on discussions that took place at a meeting hosted by the Los Angeles chapter of the Society for Information Displays (SID) earlier this year. Invited speakers presented on the subject of LEDs in liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Hand-held devices like phones and MP3 players are already heavily using LED backlighting units. Recent products like global positioning units and back-seat auto displays in family vans and SUVs are also utilizing LEDs. But the market is shifting not only into a broadening of these applications but also extending into laptop and LCD TV displays. The hand-held market has seen dollar growth but the meeting speakers indicated that this growth may be difficult to maintain due to fierce competition between LED makers and the reduction in the average number of LEDs needed per device.

It was Bill Kennedy from Toyoda Gosei who spoke about the growth in usage in the large-area LCDs. The main market segments, he said, are 11″ -17″ displays for laptops and 17 inch and higher displays for computer monitors. By 2009 or 2010 the LCD TV set market could also take off as less expensive and higher brightness LEDs are available.

If these estimations are true, not only will we see a significant impact in the home theater products available on the market, but we will also see a dramatic impact in energy efficiency in the home. Long-lasting home lighting options coupled with energy efficient entertainment units can make a dramatic impact on the energy costs of any household.
