LED and OLED Research and Development in the U.S.
Energy saving is a priority for everyone, including the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). That is why the DOE has funded a number of LED and organic LED (OLED) lighting research and development projects over the last three years. The projects are part of the department’s Solid State Lighting program and are aimed at better preparing the U.S. for long-term energy conservation.
The funding for these projects is now at $91.8 million dollars, $71.9 million of the DOE’s money and $19.9 million from participating small and large businesses, academia, and industrial labs. These funds are divided between OLED and LED projects and then again between core technology research and product development.
The LED research being conducted falls into six major areas:
- Quantum efficiency
- Longevity
- Stability and control
- Packaging
- Infrastructure
- Cost reduction
LED Magazine has published a detailed report on the U.S. Department of Energy’s projects and where these may benefit citizens and the industry in the future. You can read more on that web site.
