Lack of Rainfall Forces Closure of California Hiking Areas
The Riverside County Fire Chief will ask the Board of Supervisors to close several hiking areas in the county because of hazardous fire conditions. If approved, the closure is expected to begin immediately, which may get in the way of many california campers’ plans for the July 4 holiday.
“Our hillsides are volatile,” said supervisor Roy Wilson. “I’d hate to burn people up just because it’s a holiday.”
It is estimated that the fire-prone areas would ably remain closed until December or until a significant change occurs in the dry conditions. So far this season, the area has only received 3.84 inches of rain in contrast to the normal seasonal total of 11.75 inches.
Hiking and camping enthusiasts who typically vacation in Riverside County outdoor areas are being encouraged to visit other parks in the state, like Joshua Tree National Park.
