Kid-Friendly Camping Tips

LED Lenser Camp Light KitKids are great camping companions:  their curiosity and enthusiasm is contagious.  It’s nearly impossible not to notice natural wonders with a tyke at your side.  Still, camping with children requires more preparation and planning.  The National Wildlife Federation offers the following tips to make your camping trip full of oohs and aahs,  rather than  complaints.

Clothes:

  • Kids often lose heat faster than adults, so packing layers of clothing is a good idea.
  • Consider packing each day’s outfit in a separate plastic grocery bag.  This makes it easier to navigate getting dressed in a tent.  As a bonus, dirty clothes can be stuffed back into the bag at the end of the day, keeping the pack organized.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Teach procedures for what to do if lost:  hug a tree, and blow a whistle three times to call for help.   (Younger children can be presented with a compass and whistle on a lanyard.)
  • Provide each child with a flashlight.  This will help them feel safe during midnight bathroom trips.  Flashlight play also helps children feel safe at night.

Older children may appreciate the LED Lenser Camping Light kit, shown above, for its compact versatile design.  This flashlight may also be used to provide table light for your game night, or broad light for tent time.
