Japan Funds OLED Research by Sony and Others
The Japanese government is hoping to spur improvements in OLED technology (and perhaps spur their own high-tech economic standing) by funding Sony, Sharp, and other companies in developing OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) techology. Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa recently told the Associated Press that reported Sony is eager to develop manufacturing relationships to support the production of OLED screens. The group of companies aim to create a 40-inch OLED display around 2015. Sony introduced the first commercially available OLED display last year, with an eleven inch display, a mere three-millimeter thickness–and a pricetag comprable to 10 LCD displays.
