IMS Reports LED Automotive Market To Double Within 10 Years
According to a recent report from IMS Research, the LED automotive market is expected to double over the next 10 years. Where most LED applications today are focused on the interior of the car – dashboard and display backlights, indicator lights, etc – it is estimated that LEDs will become more prevalent in external auto lamps in the coming years. The report states an expected LED automotive market growth from $650 million in 2006 to $1.3 billion by 2016.
The increase in LED usage in external automobile application will stem from a growth in the use of daytime running lights over the next several years. Countries like Canada and Sweden require daytime running lights on their autos and their inclusion are becoming more prevalent on cars in the U.S. and some EU countries. Studies on their usage have concluded that they can save lives, which feeds the notion that they will be mandatory in the future.
LEDs serve as an energy efficient and unique alternative for halogen and xenon lamps in daytime running lights and other automotive light bulb applications. “LED DRLs have long lifetime and low power consumption as well as an attractive appearance,” said IMS analyst Jamie Fox.
