Searching continues for a 67 year old Michigan man who went hiking to the summit of Mauna Kea and had not returned. Brian Murphy decided to go hiking on the Big Island of Hawaii and checked in at the Visitor’s Center located at the 9,000 foot level on Wednesday. A contact at the center advised him not to go any further but he insisted. Murphy was only wearing a t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes and a hat – he was not prepared for any overnight stay in the wilderness area and bad weather since then has made ground searching difficult. Crews are continuing to search the area by air.
This is a perfect example of how weather can trick you into thinking you are safe. Always be prepared for inclement weather – no matter where you are hiking!!! For more on packing a hiking survival kit read more on this blog.
