Holland Tunnel Will Get New LED Light Fixtures
The Star-Leger news has reported that the George Washington Bridge and the Holland Tunnel will be updated with new LED lighting. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s board of commissioners approved a $4.7 million dollar investment to retrofit the conventional lighting in the two Hudson River crossings with new energy-saving LED fixtures.
The plan outlines the replacement of 4,200 fluorescent light fixtures with 1,736 LED fixtures in the Holland Tunnel. The current lamps in the tunnel last approximately 18 months – the new LED fixtures will last roughly 15 years. The city expects this will save $340,000 a year. The 156 mercury vapor lamps on the George Washington Bridge’s cables will be replaced with 156 LED light sources and is estimated to save the city $50,000 annually.
The transition of both roadways’ light fixtures is expected to begin in 2008.
