Hiker and Writer, Colin Fletcher, Dies at 85

Outdoor enthusiasts are mourning the loss of Colin Fletcher this week.  Fletcher died at the age of 85 from old age complicated more so by injuries he sustained when hit by a car in 2001.  The accident caused a number of broken bones and severe brain trauma that he never was able to fully overcome.

Fletcher wrote about his hiking adventures throughout his life. Most notably, he wrote The Thousand-Mile Summer. The book was based on his 1958 hike from Mexico to Oregon where he contemplated whether to marry his girlfriend at the time. His decision to marry was brief; the marriage lasted for only a few weeks. But the book became overwhelmingly popular. Fletcher went on to write The Complete Walker and The Man Who Walked through Time. Both have been influential and well-loved reading for hiking and other outdoor enthusiasts.
