Flexible OLED Display Rolled Out
Today Arizona State University’s Flexible Display Center Researchers announced they have created a 4.1 monochrome GVGA organic-emitting diode (OLED) display on DuPont Polyethylene naphthalate substrate. Big words. Big words I know but check it out, this new innovation is just another step in the evolution of LED technology. This is a major step toward creating flexible OLEDs – rollable, flat displays. Think about what that could mean for computer displays and televisions…! The energy efficiency is incredible with this innovation. The material used in the OLED these researchers created allows the lights to convert 100% of the electrical energy into light; fluorescent OLEDs convert only 25%.
You have to wonder what this could mean for future outdoor lighting applications. Might we see light “patches” that you can simply stick onto your back or front, serving as a flashlight for hiking. Or will LED headlamps get smaller and lighter, like running sweat bands? It’s exciting to watch as the technology paves the way for new LED products for outdoorsmen, families and scientists alike.
