Fall Hiking in the Northwest
John D. Carr put together a great piece on the best places to hike this fall in the Pacific Northwest. The trails he highlighted are known to showcase some of the best wildflower and tree colors the season has to offer. They also often have opportunities for animal watching. Deer and elk can be spotted in nearby meadows and smaller critters may be out foraging along the trails. Below are the trails he recommends this time of year:
1. Salmon Butte Trail to Salmon Butte Summit in Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness
2. East Crater Trail to Junction Lake in Indian Heaven Wilderness
3. Fret Creek and Divide Trails to Lookout Mountain Summit in Badger Creek Wilderness
4. Elk Lake and Welcome Lakes Trails to Upper Welcome Lake in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness
5. Vista Ridge Trail to Wy’East Basin in Mount Hood Wilderness
