Cree Reaches Next Level of High-Power LED
US-based LED manufacturer, Cree announced their research and development division achieved an efficacy of 161 lumens / watt with a white high-power LED using a 1x1mm chip. This is the highest value reported to date by any LED developer in the industry. The tests were done under standard LED test conditions.
“Cree is inventing, commercializing and delivering LED lighting innovations that aim to obsolete the energy-inefficient light bulb,” said John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics in a recent press release.
Of course, LEDs with this level of output are not yet available in any lighting fixture or product, though Cree is selling millions of their 100+ lumen XLamp LEDS for implementation in a wide variety of products. But this news is a strong indicator that the industry is continuing to strive to improve their technology in order to eventually be the de facto light bulb for all lighting products.
