Cree LED University Program Grows

Cree LED UniversityIn April of this year, Cree launched their LED University Program aimed at bringing together some of the brightest minds to help accelerate the adoption of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. Cree is one of the leading manufacturers of energy efficient LED light sources and has always been on the cutting edge of the technology’s innovations.

When the program was launched North Caroline State University, Marquette University, University of California – Santa Barbara, University of Arkansas and Tianjin Polytechnic University in China were the initial participants.

Now, nearly 7 months later, Cree has announced that they have added new universities to the program – University of Notre Dame and Madison Area Technical College.

Notre Dame is implementing four pilot installations to evaluate the feasibility of LED lighting on their campus. Madison Area Technical College located in Wisconsin has been installing LED lighting fixtures into its campus infrastructure since 2007. They now have LED illumination along their campus walkways, student center and administrative offices.

It is exciting to hear about these programs going on, especially in today’s economic and energy crisis. The sooner we can improve the efficiency of our lighting AND make these lighting accessible to all cities, homes and businesses, the sooner we can reduce energy consumption throughout the U.S. What is clear is that curious minds like those of these students can make a difference in the world we live in.

I picked up some of these NEW LED lights and they give a ton of light. The old ones were a joke. Technology might save us yet.
