Colorado Man Breaks State Mackinaw Record

Florence, Colorado resident Don Walker broke the state Mackinaw record while fishing at Blue Mesa Reservoir over the Memorial Day holiday. The record-breaking catch weighed in at 50-pounds, 5-ounces.  The previous state record holding catch (caught by Walker’s brother-in-law in 2003, ironically enough) weighed 46-pound, 14-ounces.  The record was officially verified by the local Department of Wildlife.

Walker and his wife were fishing from a boat near Soap Creek in about 40 feet of water when he pulled in the 44 ¼ inch long Mac. Local sources believe even larger fish are available in the Blue Mesa. Colorado fishermen are encouraged to set out for the reservoir this summer to try their hand at breaking Walker’s record.

The record breaking fish can be seen on the cover of the June edition of the Colorado Fishing and Hunting News.
