Sixth Cascade Mountain Death Raises Awareness of Avalanche Safety
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007
The body of 22 year old Kirk Reiser was found on Friday after a week of searching, raising the number of avalanche related deaths this season to six. Reiser was hiking with a friend outside of Paradise, Washington toward Camp Muir when bad weather forced them to turn back about halfway to their destination. On the return back, Reiser set off an avalanche that swept him down the mountain where he disappeared.

According to the Southern Arizona Rescue Association, the number of hiking-related incidents in Arizona was up this year, in part because of an increase in population in the state. “It’s [hiking incidents] not really that they didn’t plan enough ahead, its just they didn’t look at reality,” said Richard Kunz, a rescue worker for over 40 years.
The Arizona Daily Sun reported on Tuesday that search crews found a pair of hikers Sunday who became lost near Humphreys Summit. The hikers, having remembered to bring a cell phone with them on their hike, called 911 around 7:00pm and Search and Rescue volunteers were quickly dispatched to the area. The hikers, a 32-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were hiking the summit when they meandered off the marked trail and got lost. The lost hikers built a fire to keep warm which helped the helicopter crew spot them. The hikers were found around 11:30pm that evening.
