First, the Imnaha pack of Eastern Oregon added four new pups to its pack this spring, slowly moving the animals towards delisting as an endangered species in Oregon. Now, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that a gray wolf pup that was trapped, radio-collared and released earlier this month may be proof that the state is home to a third breeding wolf pack.

According to a WDFW press release earlier this month, the presence of the 50-pound gray wolf pup in northern Pend Oreille County, just south of the Canadian border, indicates that there is most likely a pack in the area.

“If the den is in Washington, the pack can be considered a Washington pack; if the den is in British Columbia, it is a Canadian pack,” said WDFW representative Harriet Allen. “Our Canadian colleagues are aware of wolf activity in that area, and will assist with monitoring on their side of the border.”

The gray wolf was eliminated as a reproducing species in Washington in the 1930s, mainly as a result of shooting, trapping and even poisoning. Since then the species has been on both the Washington and federal endangered species list. Federal recovery efforts over the past few years have produced a steady rebound of the species, but it is still considered endangered.

“We know from reports that individual wolves have been roaming in and out of the state in various locations for years,” Allen said, “but documenting and maintaining packs as successful breeding pairs is necessary achieve conservation objectives and move toward eventual removal of the gray wolf from state and federal endangered-species lists.”

And your hull. And your trailer.

According to a recent WDFW press release, officers this summer will be conducting mandatory checks of boats, trailers and fishing gear for invasive aquatic species – specifically, zebra mussels and quagga mussels. These non-native species pose a major threat to native fish and wildlife, and the WDFW wants boaters to be aware of the ecological ramifications of their presence. Here are some specifics:

What are the invasive species?

The species that the WDFW is targeting most aggressively are zebra mussels and quagga mussels. These species are native to the Caspian Sea, were introduced to the Great Lakes in the 1980s and have since spread to over 20 states. These non-native nuisances multiply quickly and consume food supplies needed by local fish and wildlife to survive. They can even clog water intake systems at power plants and public water suppliers. Yikes!

How can I prevent their spread?

Boaters are legally responsible for making sure there aren’t any non-native species hitching a ride on their boats, trailers or fishing equipment. The easiest way of preventing their spread is to carefully inspect and clean your boat, trailer or gear before and after you use it. Clean off mud and debris and drain any standing water in your boat.

What if I don’t?

Spreading invasive species carries series repercussions. Unknowingly importing a non-native species is a misdemeanor and can lead to up to $5,000 in fines and up to a year in jail. Knowingly importing them is a felony and can lead to much harsher punishments.

Here’s why:

More water = more fish

Many of the lakes and reservoirs in the Pacific Northwest run dry in late summer, especially in desert-climate locations such as Eastern Oregon. With late spring rain – and lots of it – it’s less likely that these lakes and reservoirs will dry up. The longer there is water in the lakes and reservoirs, the longer trout and steelhead can survive, meaning Northwest anglers will have more chances to exercise their fishing equipment. Late spring rain is also good for local fisheries.

More water = more vegetation = more game

FACT: Late spring rains and a relatively warm summer encourage plant growth. What does that mean to you, the avid Pacific Northwest hunter? Why, more late-season game, of course! While the spring bear and turkey hunting seasons were adversely affected by the weather, the elk and deer seasons are looking good. And despite some flood-related losses in Northeastern Oregon, the duck population responded very well to the wet past few months.

More water = fewer forest fires

Unseasonably wet weather is Mother Nature’s ultimate defense against summer wildfires. While there is no definite way to say how the rain will affect forest fires in the area, it’s a safe assumption that the added moisture will do more good than harm.

One of the biggest threats to our forests is manmade lead items. Lead has no biologically beneficial role, yet it is often used in ammunition for upland hunting, line sinkers and other forms of fishing gear. Wildlife will often ingest spent lead shot and bullets, hooks and sinkers, which causes them to suffer negative behavioral, physiological and biochemical effects. In many cases, lead poisoning will lead to death.

Even animals that don’t ingest lead themselves can be exposed to it if lead products have dissolved and entered the groundwater. Here’s what you can do:

  • Make sure the hunting equipment and fishing gear you are using is lead-free. Metals such as tin are much safer than lead and are readily available. Some companies even offer biodegradable fishing equipment.
  • Safely remove any discarded metal items you find while hunting or fishing. Old bullet casings or sinkers can harm wildlife, even if an animal doesn’t ingest it.
  • Educate others about the dangers of lead. The more people know how dangerous it can be to wildlife and plant life, the less likely they will be to use lead-based products.

Found mostly in the southern part of the state, orca populations have dwindled over the years due to declining salmon populations, an increase of pollutants in the water, and disruptions from passing boats. In fact, the orca is recognized by both the federal government and the State of Washington as “endangered.” The current southern orca population consists of about 90 whales.

So why the reminder? Aren’t passing boats the least of the orca’s worries? According to WDFW deputy chief of enforcement Mike Cenci, not exactly.

“Human disturbances, including boat traffic, can interfere with their ability to feed, communicate with one another and care for their young,” Cenci said in a press release. “Boaters have a responsibility to keep their distance.”

In case a friendly reminder isn’t enough to warrant caution, remember that violating the state law can result in a fine of up to $1,025. For breaking the federal law, the fine is up to $10,000. Specifically, here is what the state law says you can’t do to or around a southern resident whale:

  • Approach within 100 yards.
  • Cause a vessel or other object to approach within 100 yards.
  • Fail to disengage the transmission of a vessel within 100 yards.
  • Intercept by remaining in its path until it comes within 100 yards.
  • Feed it.

The 29-year-old Tacoma resident was snowboarding on Mt. Hood with a friend on Saturday, May 1, when he went missing. Dahl was reported lost around 5 p.m. on Saturday and was not discovered until 9:30 a.m. the following morning. Despite the night he spent on the mountain, Dahl discovered in good condition.

Though dressed for the elements, Dahl did not have any communication or electronic devices with him at the time he went missing. With his cell phone locked in a vehicle at Timberline Lodge and no flashlight or emergency lantern to use, Dahl was left in the dark on Mt. Hood as soon as the sun set. A number of rescue agencies worked to find him, including Benton County, Portland Mountain Rescue, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Hood River Crag Rats, Mountain Wave Communications and the American Medical Response.

Dahl’s story is an inspiring and cautionary tale of the potential dangers the great outdoors can pose. Even experienced skiers, snowboarders and hikers should carry some sort of emergency LED light at all times, if not a cell phone or other communications device. CON: Availability

Flat tires accounted for forty-seven percent of all trailer roadside assistance calls made in 2008. Unlike car tires, trailer flats carry the additional risk of boat-related damage and injury. Luckily, there are a few easy measures you can take to reduce your risk of blowing a tire and ending up stuck on the shoulder:

  • Make sure you’re using the appropriate trailer tires. Not all tires are made equal, and even though your tire may look like the right size and shape, there is still a chance that it’s the wrong type. All boat trailer tires are marked with an “ST” designation on the sidewall. This stands for “specialty trailer,” and if it’s missing from your tires then it’s time to get new ones.
  • Don’t overload your boat or trailer. Carrying too much weight on a trailer is a sure-fire way to cause premature tire damage that may lead to a flat. Know how much weight your trailer can hold, and stay under that limit.
  • Protect your tires from the elements. Excessive moisture can weaken or warp your tires, while UV radiation from the sun can lead to dry rot. Parking your trailer on a dry, covered surface will help avoid these common problems. If that’s not an option for you, investing in tire covers will also help.
  • Perform regular tire checks and maintenance. If you don’t know what state your tires are in before you take the trailer out, you run a bigger risk of losing one to a blowout.

Whenever you take an extended road trip, make sure your outdoor emergency kit is with you and in good working order, including an emergency LED flashlight.

    Be safe around rivers and streams. Melting snow and heavy rain often lead to high water levels and fast-moving currents. Fresh, moving water can also be much colder than you’d think, so try to avoid springtime swimming or wading.

    Pack water-resistant gear. Because rain can show up unexpectedly, all your tents, tarps, and sleeping bags should be water-resistant. Make sure you have water-resistant lighters or matches to use when starting a campfire, and store any food in airtight containers or covered vehicles.

She was found among the rocks near the base of an 800-foot-high rock face, where authorities believe she fell from a cliff.

    In the days following her disappearance, helicopters and extensive search parties were sent to look for her, but officials called off the search after finding no trace of the hiker. James Martin of Stevenson, who decided to check the area below the cliff because he thought it hadn’t been searched thoroughly by ground rescuers, said he first spotted her blue jacket before his son noticed the body.

    “Her clothing blended right in. I was standing 15 feet from her and didn’t recognize her,” Martin told the Oregonian.

    Although Huether’s mother described her as an “avid hiker and experienced outdoorswoman,” the 24-year-old apparently fell victim to a steep, treacherous section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Her death illustrates the importance of safety precautions on the trail, even among seasoned hikers. To remain safe while hiking, follow these basic guidelines:

    • Always bring food, water and an LED flashlight or headlamp in case of unforeseen emergencies. It’s also a good idea to bring a first-aid kit, emergency blanket, whistle and pocket knife or multi-tool.
    • Never leave without telling someone your planned route as well as your estimated time of departure and return.
    • Never hike alone, no matter how experienced you are.

      • Stay safe!

      You arrive and everyone is excited to be there–the kids are ready to run all over the place. After slowing them down, one gets his pants snagged on a thick blackberry vine. No problem: you’ll just grab your knife and pull it away. That way you don’t get stuck with thorns and the kid won’t either. But there is just one problem: you forgot your knife. You resort to trying to pull the furious vine away with your hands. That doesn’t work, so you try picking the kid up to see if the vine will fall, which it does, but it ends up getting stuck on you.       • Know where you are going and what you are doing. What is the geography and environment like? Make plans according to the terrain, weather and equipment. Plan your route and make sure someone back home what these plans are.
      • Maximize your warmth. Keep your head covered at all times as not doing so can make you lose 40-45% of your body heat. Keep your neck, wrists, and ankles covered as well.
        Other tips top keep warm, which were adapted from the U.S. Army Survival Manual include:
        ** Keep your clothes clean
        ** Do not get overheated
        ** Layer your clothing and wear them loosely
        ** Keep your clothes dry

      • Don’t panic.
      • Always think ahead: set up camp early; make sure you have enough firewood. Thinking ahead about little things like this can help things seem a little easier.
      • Do not travel in a blizzard or whiteout conditions: it is hard to judge the terrain in these conditions.
      • Be careful when crossing ice: lay flat and crawl across instead of walking.
      • Do not travel in deep snow if possible. If one does have to travel in deep snow, do not travel over bodies of water that are snow-covered or in areas that look prone to avalanches.
      • Do not give up hope.

      Surviving in the cold is one of the harder things stranded hikers have ever had to endure. The cold can weaken a person’s ability to think clearly, numbs the body, and is very unpredictable. Using all of the tips you have learned about hiking safety and adapting them to cold weather conditions can be the difference between life and death.

It is always unfortunate when we get word of someone who died while hiking when conditions are relatively good.

      A yet unidentified man in his forties was hiking on Tuesday at Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge when he fell nearly 250 feet and died. The man is believed to have been hiking alone when he crossed the barriers and walked 20 or more feet to the edge of the falls.

      Even if everything seems safe, please understand fellow hikers, that those barriers have been placed on the trail for a reason. They are there to protect you, not to deter you from having fun. The professionals who work to make those parks safe understand the terrain and potential dangers in those areas.

      Read the signs. Obey the signs. Have fun.

The temperature is soaring above the 100 degree mark and people are scrambling to find a pool, sprinkler or river to jump into to beat the heat. I live near the Willamette River so I have had fun watching all the speed boats, jet skis and sail boats moving up and down the river. It’s exciting to see the activity grow the last few weeks. I can’t help but think, however, that many of those boaters should take a moment to review their boater safety before they head out for a day of fun.

      Boating is fun for young and old. However, as more and more boats are on the water and some parts of the river get shallower, it is important that boaters review basic boat safety and ensure their boat is in proper working order. The United States Coast Guard offers a great online resource for recreational boaters who want to check out rules, regulations and safety recommendations.

      Basics like ensuring you have life jackets for everyone on the boat, that the boat has all the necessary safety equipment and flares in case of emergencies, and a working radio if help is needed are common safety checks all boaters should do before hitting the river. Additionally, refreshing yourself with a boater safety course every few years is always a good idea, especially if it has been a while since you have been on the river, or if you plan on taking kids out on the boat.

The Seattle Parks Department is removing garbage cans to trim the budget for garbage collection throughout the city. The city hopes that the removal of the trash cans will prompt park visitors to take their trash home when they leave (as opposed to force people to throw their litter in the streets). For me, it seems that removing more than 750 trash cans from locations around the city could deter people from using the picnic and BBQ areas created for city residents. I guess I don’t have a lot of confidence that people will bring their own trash bags to haul their lunch items away everyday.

      Either way, it is a growing trend, not only in city parks but in state camping and recreation areas. Campers and hikers this summer are being asked to carry out what they pack in, in order to keep the parks environmentally healthy and safe. They also want to reduce the cost of having parks and rec clean up if it is not necessary. Consider this when you start packing for your next camping trip. Bring items that can be easily packed out and consider a couple of different garbage options now available for campers.

The sentiment is ringing true all over the U.S. Though the economy has many pinching pennies and re-evaluating priorities, it has not stopped people entirely from enjoying the things they love most. Rather, they are simply recreating their favorite past times to fit their budget. Some of those “tweeks” include:

      1. Stay Close In: Many anglers and hunters are moving to rivers and mountain areas closer to home to save money on gas and overnight supplies.
      2. Shorten Your Excursion: Choosing to take 3 or 4 day trips rather than two weeks to go hunting is saving a lot of outdoors people added cost of supplies.
      3. Make Changes Elsewhere: The true blue outdoorsmen and women don’t let the economy stop them from doing what they love. Knowing they will be spending money fishing or hunting, many are simply evaluating other parts of their life to find places to cut back. After all, there is a lot to be said about your health if you keep doing things that gives you pleasure.

I mean, they really are all around us, easily accessible and varied in the activities and scenery they provide. I think a lot of Northwesterners feel the same way. We see the wilderness around us, we know it is there, but we don’t necessarily visit it every weekend. This attitude may be in part why the number of people visiting national parks has decreased dramatically since 2004, especially in the Northwest.

      Experts are not clear as to why the decrease has occurred though they do have several ideas:
      1. Rising Visitor Fees
      2. High Gas Prices
      3. An uninterested youth base (the video game generation)
      4. An ever growing urban society

      I don’t know – what do you think? Do you think our national forests are in danger? Do you think society no longer appreciates outdoor pursuits? I don’t think that is the case. I think there is just more and more out there to compete for our time. There are not enough vacation days to go visit your family in California AND take a weeks camping vacation in the Deschutes National Forest. It’s sad but our lives are fast moving these days. What is clear about this trend is that it could have long-term negative effects. Many of the communities around these forests thrive on tourist income to survive. It could also mean diminished federal funding to support and maintain these forests.

      So, what do we do? Put hiking, camping or just a simple day trip on your to-do list in the next 2-3 months. Bundle up, make a thermos of hot cocoa, grab your binoculars and supplies and spend some time outside enjoying what this planet has to offer.
