So you think you’re a pretty experienced climber, eh? You’ve donned your gear, grabbed your long-lasting flashlight and been up your favorite mountain, what – twenty times? Fifty? A hundred? That ain’t nothin’.

This summer, 56-year-old George Dunn became the first person to climb Mount Rainier 500 times. That’s right – FIVE-HUNDRED TIMES.

Dunn, who is a Mount Rainer hiking guide and director of Ashford’s International Mountain Guides, completed the hike with his wife Nancy, his 16 year old son Jeremy, and his good friend Phil Ershler (Ershler has climbed the summit 440 times himself).

How much mountain climbing is 500 successful climbs, exactly? Well, according to “The News Tribune” Adventure Guys Blog, Dunn has covered approximately 9,000 miles and 4.5 million vertical feet. To put that into prospective, that’s a little over 852 vertical miles. That’s like hiking across the state of Texas.

Dunn started climbing Mount Rainier in the late 60s while he was attending Renton High School. He started guiding hikes in 1975.

“George is a consummate professional and a true gentleman,” Rainier Mountaineering Inc. guide Gary Talcott told The Adventure Guys. “He’s guided, mentored and inspired countless climbers, including some of the best, like Ed Viesturs.” [Ed Viesturs is the only American to climb all of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.]

So the next time you start thinking you’re the King of the Mountain, think of George Dunn and get back out there. Chances are you have some catching up to do.

Clatsop Beaches Closed to Clam Digging

If you’re thinking of going clam digging on any of the Clatsop beaches this next month, think again.

According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Clatsop beaches near Newport, Ore., will be closed to clam digging from July 15 to Sept. 30 to help preserve young razor clams.

The ODFW has been closing the Clatsop beaches since 1967 in order to help young, newly-set clams establish themselves. According to Matthew Hunter, ODFW’s Shellfish and Estuary Project Leader, the Clatsop beach young clams must be protected if Oregon wants a healthy clam population.

“We want to protect the next generation of clams on the Clatsop beaches,” Hunter said in a press release July 13. “These beaches are the most productive razor clam beaches in the state, accounting for more than 90 percent of the total harvest.”

Hunter also said despite the closure, some diggers still show up.

“Usually the first tide series or two after the closure we will see people who don’t understand why there isn’t anyone else harvesting clams,” he said. But ignorance isn’t innocence, he added. “I know OSP (Oregon State Police) has pretty much found they are guaranteed to write tickets for illegal harvest every low-tide series during the closure.”

Illegal Bird Hunting a Big Problem in Pacific Northwest

After rescuing and rehabilitating a bald eagle near Rainier last month, the Audubon Society of Portland has come to the conclusion that illegal bird hunting in the Northwest could be a much bigger problem than most people think.

According to conservation director Bob Sallinger, most birds that are shot illegally are never recovered. Their bodies are left to be scavenged and decompose, making it very difficult for anyone to know the exact number of birds killed each year.

“The fact that we get in as many birds that are shot as we do is indicative of a much larger problem,” Sallinger told Oregonian contributor Lynn Terry.

There are a few main reasons people illegally shoot birds. Sometimes the hunter feels the bird is interfering with his or her pets or livestock. Sometimes the birds are killed so the hunter can sell the bird’s feathers, talons or heads. Other times, the birds are shot by people who just don’t care that what they’re doing is illegal.

Sallinger wants to see better enforcement of the current laws and stricter punishments of those who break them. He says most perpetrators get off with “minimal penalties” when caught and convicted.

Spring Chinook Fishery Opens on Snake River

Great news for Oregon anglers: The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has opened the upper Snake River for Chinook fishing, all the way from Dug Bar Boat Ramp to Hells Canyon Dam.

The opening was prompted by an abundance of hatchery-origin Chinook salmon expected to return to the upper Snake River area this year. The 15,000 salmon are more than enough for the hatchery’s needs, so the ODFW, along with the Idaho Fish and Game fishery managers, are making the rest available for Northwest anglers.

There are a few limits to Chinook fishing on the upper Snake River. The daily bag limit for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon is four, and only two of those salmon can be adults longer than 24 inches. To put it in layman’s terms, you can keep either four young salmon or two adult salmon. Once you reach those limits, you’re done for the day.

The upper Snake River opening is only temporary, so make sure you get a chance to go out and take advantage of the opportunity. The fishery will announce when it plans on closing, which ODFW officials say probably won’t be for at least a few months.

Visit National Parks for Free April 17-25

With spring comes great weather, wonderful foliage and a chance to visit any national park in the country without paying admission.

April 17-25 is National Park Week, when all 392 national parks will offer free admission in an effort to get families and individuals back outside to enjoy the great outdoors. Many parks will also have family-friendly activities, including Wildflower Day at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky and the mysterious Ancient Petroglyph Walk at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in Hawaii.

Many park vendors and concessioners are also offering discounts on outdoor equipment and lodging, cutting prices on souvenirs and tours, and presenting coupons for nearby dining and shopping.

Some park fees may still apply, such as camping, group reservations and facilities provided by outside contractors. Check with your favorite national park for more details.

If you’ve got a ways to drive before you reach your destination, keep in mind a few handy travel tips. And whatever park you choose to visit, don’t rely on the rangers for safety; always bring along your wilderness survival kit.

Youth Angling Events Help Kids Develop Fishing Skills

Many anglers dream of the day when their children will join them at the shoreline with fishing rod in hand. It’s never too early to start, and many public lakes and ponds in the Northwest offer fishing events for kids throughout the summer to provide successful early angling experiences.

This weekend, Klineline Pond in Vancouver, Wash., will be closed to the public for its 11th Annual Kids’ Fish-In Event. Happening this Saturday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., the Kids’ Fish-In will offer 1,200 kids ages 5-14 the opportunity to catch, clean and keep up to two fish.

Although registration is already closed for this event, there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the summer for young anglers. Visit the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife website for a statewide schedule of youth angling events in Oregon. For youth fishing events in Washington, check out the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife website.

To ensure your child’s first fishing trip is a success, follow these youth fishing tips from WDFW:

Let kids help plan and prepare for the trip so they feel more involved.
Bring a dependable tackle and show your child how to use it before the trip.
Make sure your child is dressed warmly so he or she won’t be distracted by the cold.
Try to ensure your child catches something, regardless of what type of fish it is.
Bring along some form of entertainment in case the fish aren’t biting.

Women, Prepare for a Year of Outdoor Adventures

Fight against the stereotype of male-dominated outdoor sports and inject some femininity into the worlds of hunting, fishing and outdoor survival by attending the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s three-day workshop for outdoor women. This coastal campout helps women develop outdoor skills through activities such as kayaking, outdoor cooking, trap shooting, outdoor photography, archery, fly fishing and more.

Missing PSU Student Remains Lost Near Pacific Crest Trail

The search for PSU student Katherine Huether continues today after she did not return from a hike last Thursday, March 4, 2010. Huether, 24 texted a friend letting them know that she was going on a short hike and would be home around 8:00pm that night. She has not yet returned.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office has expanded the search after few clues have been found. Her car was found at the Bonneville Dam trailhead and a credit card receipt with Huether’s name on it was found near Table Mountain. Neither have resulted in finding the lost hiker.

New Tonquin Trail in Tualatin and Sherwood Opening for Bikes and Hikes

Construction has begun in Oregon on a new pedestrian and bike trail that will connect the Willamette and Tualatin rivers and stretch 12 to 16 miles between Sherwood, Tualatin, and Wilsonville.

The new Tonquin Trail, funded in part by federal and state transportation grants and lottery funds, will cost an estimated $9.5 million to build and should take a few years to complete. The trail will open up pedestrian and bike access in Washington and Clackamas counties and, some hope, will encourage more people to use alternative methods of transportation. The Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition has put its two cents in, stating that the new trail will hopefully be used for much more than just recreation.

Thinking about getting out on the new trail when it’s complete? Make sure you have proper hiking equipment and dress appropriately for the weather. While the new trail will be paved and will run through populated areas, overexertion and dehydration are common problems wherever you hike or bike.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, and stop to rest at the scenic views along the new Tonquin Trail whenever you get tired. If you take the trail in the evening, bring a flashlight. LED flashlights are durable and have long battery lives, making them perfect for hiking your favorite new trail.

Sportsmen’s Show Promises More Hunting and Fishing Prizes, Vendors

Wolf Hunting Season In Idaho Extended

If you thought wolf hunting season was almost over, think again. In most parts of Idaho, the season has been extended through March 31, or until the statewide limit of 220 wolves is reached. As of Dec. 7, only 119 kills had been reported.

Keep in mind that hunters who pursue wolves after Dec. 31 will need a 2010 wolf tag and hunting license. For more information on hunting wolves in Idaho, or to find out which state zones are still open, visit the Idaho Fish and Game website.

If you decide to get in on the extra-long season, here are some tips on wolf hunting to ensure success and safety:

Watch for tracks on roads and trails; wolves regularly traverse them, just like hunters. Wolves will walk single file in each other’s footsteps, so what may appear to be a single wolf could be a pack.
Pay attention to the behavior of deer and elk. If they are alert, it could mean a wolf is nearby.
Listen to the way the wolves communicate. A well-timed howl could draw one in.
Make sure you have a strong, sharp hunting knife with a sturdy blade for field dressing.
Idaho law requires you to report within 24 hours of harvesting a wolf and to present the hide and skull to a Fish and Game official within five days.
Do not skin a mangy wolf. Instead, tag it and report the kill to Fish and Game.

Trail Maintenance | Help The Community, Enjoy Yourself

All year long, outdoor enthusiasts have enjoyed the use of hiking trails to help them connect with nature. Now, nature itself is in need of a little help. Over time, many trails have become muddy, obstructed, or overgrown, and they now require some TLC.

Whether the holidays have put you in a giving mood or your New Year’s resolution includes helping the community, trail maintenance is a great way for even the most casual outdoor enthusiast to give something back. One way to get involved is to join a volunteer work party.

The Washington Trails Association is looking for volunteers to help maintain hiking trails during several work parties throughout December and January. The goal is to repair tread and improve drainage in certain county, state, and federal parks across Washington. No experience is necessary, as training and tools are provided.

Work parties typically last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To volunteer for a particular date or location, you’ll need to sign up via the WTA website at least 48 hours in advance. If you do join a work party, make sure you show up prepared with the proper attire:

Long pants to protect your legs from brush and swinging tools.
A long-sleeve shirt for arm protection.
Sturdy boots, such as hiking boots or, preferably, work boots. Tennis shoes don’t offer adequate protection from a dropped rock or heavy tool.
Gloves to prevent pinched fingers and blistered palms.
As always when you’re out in the woods, it never hurts to have a good multi-tool on hand, such as the C2795 10 Function Micro Multi-Tool.

Are You Doing Your Oregon Hunter Mandatory Reporting?

Did you know that reporting on your hunt in Oregon is mandatory? You didn’t? Well, most other hunters don’t either. Oregon requires hunters to contact the Department of Fish and Wildlife after a hunt to record their experience. The goal of this exercise is for the state to get a better gauge of the population year to year so that they can make assessments on the number of tags to issue the next year. However, most hunters neglect to do this. The reasons are twofold: 1.) Many hunters have never had to do this before and don’t know they should do it now and 2.) Though reporting is mandatory, there is no penalty for not doing so. The requirement gets chalked up to being somewhat of an idle threat.

Regardless, the reporting process is quick and painless and does actually help the sport as a whole if hunters would take the time to do it. Below is what you need to know to report your hunts to the ODFW.

Devil’s Staircase Wilderness Bill

I know you southern Oregon folks are always looking for new and interesting places to camp, hike and generally explore. Some of our staff members are in love with the Umpqua River area. Truly, they are in love with the scenery, the river, the amount of exploration as well as relaxation that can be found all along the river area over to the coast. That’s why they eagerly brought this little tid-bit to my attention. The U.S Forest Service is endorsing a new wilderness area in the Southern Oregon Coast Range near Reedsport. The area is known as the Devil’s Staircase and features some of the most remote and beautiful waterfalls the area has to offer.

If the bill in Washington passes, the Devil’s Staircase Wilderness would become 30,000 acres of federally protected land and the Wasson and Franklin creeks would be designated as wild rivers.

So far I haven’t heard much grumbling about this proposed bill as it would ensure that this beautiful area sticks around for years to come. Of course it means, camping sites may pop up and require usage fees but it may just be worth it to enjoy those waterfalls.

Fishing Season Isn’t Over

Pheasant Hunting Event Could Be the Start of a New Hobby

Oregon Fish and Wildlife is offering several youth events where young adults can learn the basics of pheasant hunting. Pheasant hunting can be a fun way to learn about basic hunting safety, tracking and above all patience.

When going pheasant hunting, the experts recommend a few basics:

Make sure you have the right clothes. For pheasant hunting, hunters of all ages should wear a blaze-orange hunting jacket, pants suitable for the weather and moving through tall brush and a brightly colored cap that makes it easy for others to see you. Depending on where you are going, your shoes can be very important. Wear comfortable boots that provide ankle support if you will be hiking or walking a great deal.
New to pheasant hunting? Go hunting early if it’s possible. Most hunters will tell you that you will have a better chance of getting a pheasant in the early season. This is because the younger, inexperienced birds will be out at that time and will be easier to shoot. As the season goes on, those birds get a bit smarter. The only downside? You will have a lot more hunters out early in the season to compete with.

If you or your child is interested in pheasant hunting, one of the OFW events may be a great place to start. A child will need to have passed hunter education before they can participate.

Oregon Camping Fees May Go Up in 2010

The poor economy is hitting our Oregon Parks Departments with the same vigor it is effecting our job market. The government is looking to increase income for the state’s parks department to off-set the rising costs in maintaining our beautiful recreational areas.

The changes would raise fees on day-use, tent and RV sites, and cabin rentals around Oregon.

Day passes currently costing $3.00 would go up to $5.00
Tent site camping currently costing $16.00 would go up to $20.00
RV site camping currently costing $20.00 would go up to $24.00

Though the increase is not extraordinarily large, it is still a bummer that this has to happen. It could box out some families from taking camping vacations next year. What families will need to do is think of other ways to shave a few dollars off their camping trip.

Here are a few suggestions I came up with:

Shop around for good prices on bulk foods you can take with you rather than high-priced pre-packaged foods
Choose a camp ground a little closer to where you live to save on gas
Invest in a LED flashlight (like the V26 Chip Flashlight , just $24) to save on batteries and replacement
Plan to cook a meal or two over the fire to save on propane for your cook stove

Catch a Pikeminnow, Win $1000

It’s not too often you get to do something you love, something you consider a leisurely way to spend a day, and get $1,000 for doing it. The Pikeminnow Reward Program is offering a total of $60,000 in special money prizes in weekly drawings this August for fishermen who catch pikeminnows during the week and submit an entry form. The Bonneville Power Administration pays for catches of northern pikeminnow because they prey on young salmon in Oregon rivers.

Weekly drawings will reward $1,000 prizes to 15 anglers each week. You can find information on registration stations and how to catch pikeminnows at http://www.pikeminnow.org. So maybe you were wondering whether to go fishing tomorrow given the warm weather. If money motivates you, this may be a great incentive to head out to the Columbia for some pikeminnow catching.

Hot Oregon Weather A Reminder On Boater Safety

Hot enough for ya? The northwest is experiencing some of the hottest weather in several years. The temperature is soaring above the 100 degree mark and people are scrambling to find a pool, sprinkler or river to jump into to beat the heat. Hundreds of enthusiasts are getting some mileage out of their boats. I live near the Willamette River so I have had fun watching all the speed boats, jet skis and sail boats moving up and down the river. It’s exciting to see the activity grow the last few weeks. I can’t help but think, however, that many of those boaters should take a moment to review their boater safety before they head out for a day of fun.

Boating is fun for young and old. However, as more and more boats are on the water and some parts of the river get shallower, it is important that boaters review basic boat safety and ensure their boat is in proper working order. The United States Coast Guard offers a great online resource for recreational boaters who want to check out rules, regulations and safety recommendations.

Basics like ensuring you have life jackets for everyone on the boat, that the boat has all the necessary safety equipment and flares in case of emergencies, and a working radio if help is needed are common safety checks all boaters should do before hitting the river. Additionally, refreshing yourself with a boater safety course every few years is always a good idea, especially if it has been a while since you have been on the river, or if you plan on taking kids out on the boat.

Get the Kids Outside: Family Nature Walk – Oak Island, Oregon

Doctors and advocates have been telling us for the last couple of years that our kids are getting less active, more obese and less motivated. They are siting everything from video games to more working parents as the cause. Though we really can’t blame any one factor, it is important we do what we can, when we can to get the kids outside and interacting with nature. The fresh air and stimulation will do them good, even if it is only for a couple of hours. Here’s one option for this weekend…

The Sierra Club Oregon Chapter is offering a two mile loop hike through white oak woodlands, grassy meadows and the shores of Sturgeon Lake this Saturday, June 20 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. Families can bring their binoculars, good walking shoes and water for this great walking excursion along the peninsula. Search & Rescue Finds Lost Hikers Near Salmon River

Two hikers in their 50s lost near the Salmon River were found by two younger hikers on Wednesday, May 28, 2009. The lost hikers were disoriented but uninjured after being out in the woods without food for two days. The one of the two young hikers who found the middle-aged couple went to the Zigzag Ranger Station to call search and rescue. So far not much else is know about how the couple got lost.

1. First, thank you thank you to the thoughtful hikers who found the couple and took the correct action to get them rescued.
2. Second, thank you thank you to the Search & Rescue response crew that safely got the couple back to safety
3. Third, hikers – BE PREPARED! Know where you are hiking. Bring the appropriate survival equipment and tell people where you are going and when you plan to return so that someone will come looking for you.

Memorial Day Camping: Maybe Not This Year

Memorial Day has been the traditional kick-off weekend for summer camping. The gateway to a summer of hiking, swimming, boating and a general feeling of outdoor ease and comfort, the weekend is a welcome introduction to all the outdoors has to offer. So much in fact, that many are finding that area camping sites are already reserved.

In Oregon, for instance, the state has announced that reserved sites at its 29 parks are all snatched up. The only hope for a reservation would be a last minute cancellation. There are 1,350 sites that do not require a reservation around the state but they are first come, first serve. So if you are heading out for a camping adventure in Oregon, you may want to head out a day or two early to ensure you get a spot at your favorite location.

As disappointing as not getting to camp at your favorite site may be, it is however a positive statement about the local interest in getting out and taking a vacation again. Last summer, many held back on outdoor adventures to save money on gas and supplies. We all seem to be coming out of our ‘hunker down‘ mentality and exploring our region’s most beautiful elements again. The great weather in Oregon, hasn’t hurt this either.

If you are still looking to save your penny’s, don’t feel left out. Staycation camping trips are still very much in and are an easy substitute for driving a few hundred miles to the mountains.

Earth Day Volunteering: Pacific Crest Trail Clean-Up

DLK blog readers know that we are big fans of the Pacific Crest Trail (see Pacific Crest Trail | Not to Be Forgotten and Oregon: Best Trails for Hiking). This amazing trailway winds up the coast from Mexico all the way to Canada, giving hikers a variety of terrains, difficulties and views. The trail is accessible from nearly every major city up the coast, making it a great and inexpensive place to explore on a spring Saturday or as a week-long summer vacation.

As Earth Day passes and we all take a look at the things we can do to make the world a better and more environmentally friendly place, the Pacific Crest Trail Association asks that those that love the trail volunteer their time to help keep it clean and clear, particularly the path from northern Oregon to southern Washington. Volunteers can give some of their time any time between now and October. This is a great way for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to give back to the beautiful mountains and forests that have done given so much to them.

Oregon Hiker Falls To Her Death At Eagle Creek Trail

KGW News has just reported that 23-year old Rhonda Casto fell down a 100 foot embankment at Eagle River Trail and died on Monday evening. Casto, who was from Portland, was hiking in the trail located west of Cascade Locks with another man when she is believed to have slipped on the wet trailway that had recently had sleet and hail activity. Police are still investigating the incident. I’ll let readers know more when it comes available.

This is the second person who has died on the trail in the last 30 days. Consider hiking another trail this weekend until the weather improves the conditions on the Eagle River Trail. We don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.

Winter Rafting on the White Salmon

With winter still in view, there’s no need to hold off on all adventures until spring. Whitewater rafting is a great pre-summer sport. Why wait until the weather is just right? Why not experience the rivers in the Northwest before they’re crowded with people?

Washington’s famous White Salmon River boasts countless rafting companies. My personal favorite is the friendly and professional staff at Zoller’s Outdoor Odyssey. This family-owned business leads trips from February through late fall. They provide you with an enjoyable and warm ride as you’re led down the whitewater.

Winter Rafting is epic with snow on the banks and mist in the air. The water feels refreshing and exhilarating as you paddle down “dead mans curve” through what used to be an old lava tube. As we were paddling down the Salmon, I noticed our guide Mark who had a survival knife strapped onto his lifejacket. Having the right gear is key. For solo kayakers and group rafters it’s essential to carry the best equipment for safety. The Coast C08 Knife is a great pick. Winter Camping Workshop – PCC

I was talking to a friend this weekend who was complaining about how they were feeling cooped up in their home. The “start of the year” flurry that many businesses experience (even in this economy) had left him feeling like he’s spent the last 6 six weeks living and breathing work, using the weekends as just a time to catch up on sleep. I suggested that perhaps he could do with some good ol’ fresh air. We talked about good places to hike around Portland and some easy things he could do to be active on those random Saturdays until he can get in a longer vacation. He was going to look into a one night camping trip around Bend.

If you are looking for a mini-adventure to take away the Winter blahs consider a winter camp or hike around the Northwest. There are many places to go, if you know where to look. The important thing this time of year is that you understand that camping or hiking this time of year requires some different skills and survival precautions.
