Brookings, Oregon Dedicates Trail to WWII Event

Japanese Bombing Site TrailMany Oregonians, and the majority of the rest of the world, don’t remember that nearly 66 years ago, a Japanese fighter pilot bombed the southern Oregon Coast near Brookings during World War II. On September 9, 1942, in the early hours of the morning, Nobuo Fujita, a Japanese pilot along with a submarine crew approached the Oregon coast aimed at starting forest fires in the U.S. that would distract the U.S. and its manpower during a critical junction in the war. Luckily, Oregon’s damp weather hampered the two bombs from doing much damage other than creating a large crater that remains there today.

Cree LED Lighting Solutions Wins Lighting for Tomorrow Award

Cree Downlight LEDThe sixth annual Lighting for Tomorrow competition recently announced this year’s winners in energy-efficient lighting innovation. Entries were judged on the color appearance, distribution and amount of light, innovation and efficiency of each entry. Cree LED Lighting Solutions won the recessed downlight category with their LR4 downlight for home or office because of its superior energy efficiency and color quality. Cree provides LED light bulbs for many Coast LED flashlights and headlamp designs. Other winners were Kichler Lighting for their under-cabinet light fixture and Luximo for their portable desk light.

Osram LEDS To Light Popular German Tunnel

Osram_LogoThe Golden Dragon LEDs from Osram have been used to illuminate Austrian streets and Olympic Fountains in Beijing. Now, Dellux Technologies has decided to use them to light the Thüringer Schmücketunnel in Germany. The A71 autobahn tunnel in Thuringen will be the longest tunnel in Europe to be illuminate using LED lights. Dellux is estimated to be installing 800 light sources into the tunnel, each containing 100 LEDs. The tunnel luminaires created by Dellux which will use Osrams LEDs are estimated to last a minimum of 15 years - that’s 130,000 hours of continuous light - and should save roughly 30% in energy costs to run.

UK Looking To Get Ahead of the LED Competition

UK FlagThe UK Technology Strategy Board understands that LED light sources are the future in efficient lighting and if they want to be ahead of the competitioin when it comes to energy-efficient technologies they better start investing now. That’s why they’ve recently announced they would be funding twelve innovative research projects to accelerate the development of lighting, lasers and displays that could revolutionize the way UK residents live. The twelve projects cover a range of development ideas including efficient LEDs, laser diodes and holographic optics. The government’s Technology Strategy Board putting forward over 7 million pounds to the estimted total cost price of 15.5 million pounds.

LEDs 2008 Event To Showcase Growing Markets

LEDS 2008 San DiegoCree Inc, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Philips Lumileds Lighting and Nichia will all be represented at this year’s LEDS 2008 event in San Diego, CA. The three-day event will take place at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina and is gearing up to be an interesting and celebratory event.
