According to Rogue District Fish Biologist Dan Van Dyke, the high numbers of returning wild chinook can be credited to greatly improved ocean conditions as well as harvest restrictions on the fish.

“It’s a great year to fish the Rogue for spring chinook,” Van Dyke said in a recent ODFW press release. “With these high numbers, we feel confident adding back some additional harvest opportunity on the mid-run wild spring chinook.”

The high numbers Van Dyke refers to are the 24,000 wild chinook projected to return this year. This number is based on fish counts running through May 9.

Because of the increased numbers of returning chinook, the Rogue River from the mouth upstream to the Gold Ray Dam opened May 22, about ten days earlier than usual. Biologists say there are good chinook returns to Cole Rivers Hatchery and the count of wild springers over Gold Ray Dam is up.

The ODFW has said that they are seeing a rise in the number of hunters and hunting licenses being requested this year which they are attributing to rising unemployment. ODFW officials believe that more men have the time to go hunting because they have been laid off or had hours cut. Though this is surely not a positive turn of events for most, it is benefiting the ODFW who sold 12,000 more hunting licenses this year than last.

While I am sure that the downturn does have some impact on this rising number of hunters, I doubt it means that hunters are out spending a lot of money on expensive gear. While money may be available for a license, pennies are most likely being pinched for any extras. But, while many are familiar with Jim Bowie’s association with the knife that bears his name, most are not familiar with how the legendary Alamo fighter first began his association with the famous knife.  It all started long before Bowie became a famous adventurer and actually began when he was an applicant for a loan. During a local election, Bowie supported the opposition to a Sheriff named Norris Wright. Unfortunately for Bowie, Wright also worked in a bank and when a loan application Bowie submitted crossed his desk, Wright stamped a huge “rejection” on the application. Later, the two would have a verbal and physical confrontation in which Wright would pull a gun on Bowie. Bowie, more angered than scared, lunged at Wright and attempted to strangle him. (It is amazing Bowie wasn’t shot during this confrontation) The fight was broken up and Bowie later resigned himself to carrying a large knife as protection.

Clip Point
Clip point blades are thin, flat blades with an accentuated point. They are great multi-purpose blades, good for hunting purposes but not the most efficient. 

Drop Point
The drop point is a sturdy, thick blade perfect for big game hunting needs.  The drop point has a slight curve from the handle to the tip of the blade making it more versatile than the clip point blade. Most hunters find this the best style for most any hunting scenarios.

Skinning knives are very similar to the drop point blade. Fishermen all over the northwest consider this as much of a landmark as Crater Lake or the Redwood Forest.  Buoy 12, a hot spot for pinkfin located on the Umpqua River, is an ideal fishing spot this time of year. 

Pinkfin or redtail surfperch, as they are also known, hold a special place in the hearts of southern Oregonians. These aggressive fish fight hard on the reel and are excellent to fry up during your Fourth of July BBQ. 

It’s the food source that brings the pinkfin into Buoy 12. When the tide is pushing out hard, the flats of the Big Bend area erode away, taking with it the delicious and nutritious sand shrimp and freshwater clams the pinkfin love so much. Surfperch are drawn into the area like magnets.  The trick, say the locals, is to fish the incoming tide until the wind blows you off the water.  You can pack an inexpensive rod and reel, cannonball sinkers, fishing scissors or knife, and a cooler to store your catch. The fishing limit for surfperch is 15 per person per day.

There are two choices for launching vessels into the Buoy 12 area – put in at the East Boat Basin and head upriver to Buoy 12 or put in at Unger’s and head downriver.

I personally don’t like to bog down my cargos with a 50 prong pocket knife unless I am heading out camping, so the idea of still having some basic emergency cutting accessories attached to something I would use daily anyway, is brilliant.   It won’t take the place of my trusty pocket tool knife set but it would be a great supplement.  I expect it may not make it through airport security either but what does these days?

So I don’t know – do I make the switch from wallet to money clip?
