Fewer Fellow Fishers Means More River For You

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Herbert Hoover may have expressed the benefits of fishing best when he said, “Fishing is much more than fish. It is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers.” When you’re surrounded by pristine nature, allowing the currents to flow around you, it’s easy to feel peaceful.

The Strange Origins of the Bowie Knife

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Considering the fact that Jim Bowie was known for his short temper it should come as no surprise that he was prone to carrying a knife. But, while many are familiar with Jim Bowie’s association with the knife that bears his name, most are not familiar with how the legendary Alamo fighter first began his association with the famous knife.  It all started long before Bowie became a famous adventurer and actually began when he was an applicant for a loan. During a local election, Bowie supported the opposition to a Sheriff named Norris Wright. Unfortunately for Bowie, Wright also worked in a bank and when a loan application Bowie submitted crossed his desk, Wright stamped a huge “rejection” on the application. Later, the two would have a verbal and physical confrontation in which Wright would pull a gun on Bowie. Bowie, more angered than scared, lunged at Wright and attempted to strangle him. (It is amazing Bowie wasn’t shot during this confrontation) The fight was broken up and Bowie later resigned himself to carrying a large knife as protection.

Arkansas Sharpening Stones

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

A knife is a useless piece of metal if it is not clean and sharp.  When a quality knife becomes dull, appropriate measures need to be taken to improve the usability and functionality of the blade. A sharpening stone is the most useful and respected way to sharpen a solid, stainless steel knife. Virtually all stones operate in the same manner - the stone cuts metal off the edge of the knife so as to make the knife sharp again. But, not all stones are identical. The most popular of all knife sharpening stones is the tried and true Arkansas stone. There are hard and soft Arkansas stones – the difference strengths provide either fine or coarse grits when sharpening the knife. This correlates with how dull the knife is and how much sharpening needs to be done.  Arkansas stones are the universal sharpening stones because they can handle any type of knife and easily sharpen any type of blade. They are a must have knife accessory for any hunter or outdoors person.

Puma PMF Tanto Blade Gift For Christmas

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

I have a cousin that has wanted to be a policeman for as long as I can remember. The notion of defending the law, getting the bad guys and getting the cool toys was an awe-inspiring profession, in his opinion. Well, his childhood dream never quite came to fruition but he still dreams about having some of the cool equipment law enforcement and rescue officers get to carry around. That’s why I’m getting him the Puma PMF Tanto Blade knife for Christmas.
