Five-Hundred and Counting…

So you think you’re a pretty experienced climber, eh? You’ve donned your gear, grabbed your long-lasting flashlight and been up your favorite mountain, what – twenty times? Fifty? A hundred? That ain’t nothin’.

This summer, 56-year-old George Dunn became the first person to climb Mount Rainier 500 times. That’s right – FIVE-HUNDRED TIMES.

Dunn, who is a Mount Rainer hiking guide and director of Ashford’s International Mountain Guides, completed the hike with his wife Nancy, his 16 year old son Jeremy, and his good friend Phil Ershler (Ershler has climbed the summit 440 times himself).

How much mountain climbing is 500 successful climbs, exactly? Well, according to “The News Tribune” Adventure Guys Blog, Dunn has covered approximately 9,000 miles and 4.5 million vertical feet. To put that into prospective, that’s a little over 852 vertical miles. That’s like hiking across the state of Texas.

Dunn started climbing Mount Rainier in the late 60s while he was attending Renton High School. He started guiding hikes in 1975.

“George is a consummate professional and a true gentleman,” Rainier Mountaineering Inc. guide Gary Talcott told The Adventure Guys. “He’s guided, mentored and inspired countless climbers, including some of the best, like Ed Viesturs.” [Ed Viesturs is the only American to climb all of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.]

So the next time you start thinking you’re the King of the Mountain, think of George Dunn and get back out there. Chances are you have some catching up to do.

Lost Snowboarder Found on Mt. Hood

In case you haven’t heard, Curtis Lawrence Dahl is okay.

The 29-year-old Tacoma resident was snowboarding on Mt. Hood with a friend on Saturday, May 1, when he went missing. Dahl was reported lost around 5 p.m. on Saturday and was not discovered until 9:30 a.m. the following morning. Despite the night he spent on the mountain, Dahl discovered in good condition.

Though dressed for the elements, Dahl did not have any communication or electronic devices with him at the time he went missing. With his cell phone locked in a vehicle at Timberline Lodge and no flashlight or emergency lantern to use, Dahl was left in the dark on Mt. Hood as soon as the sun set. A number of rescue agencies worked to find him, including Benton County, Portland Mountain Rescue, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Hood River Crag Rats, Mountain Wave Communications and the American Medical Response.

Dahl’s story is an inspiring and cautionary tale of the potential dangers the great outdoors can pose. Even experienced skiers, snowboarders and hikers should carry some sort of emergency LED light at all times, if not a cell phone or other communications device. Pocket LED torches are a great way to light your path or signal for help should you lose your way on the mountain.

Rechargeable Batteries and the Great Outdoors

Today is Earth Day, and people all over the United States are contemplating how they can live more eco-friendly lives. Using rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones has long been touted as a more environmentally responsible way to power your battery-powered gadgets.

There are many instances in which rechargeable batteries are preferable to disposable batteries, but is an outdoor adventure one of them? Here’s a look at some of the pros and cons of using disposable batteries in an outdoor setting:

PRO: Cost

While rechargeable batteries can start with a significantly higher price tag, the money saved by reusing them is well worth the initial investment. Using rechargeable batteries in low-wattage devices such as flashlights can save the frequent user hundreds of dollars a year.

CON: Charging

Disposable batteries are popular because they don’t require any thought or effort, whereas rechargeable batteries take a little more preparation. Most outdoor areas don’t offer electrical outlets to charge a dead battery, so if you don’t bring back-ups you might end up in a tight spot. Also, charging batteries can take a number of hours–time you may not have when camping, hiking or otherwise enjoying nature. To get the longest use out of your rechargeable batteries, use battery-powered flashlights and lanterns with LED light bulbs, which last longer and use 90 percent less energy than traditional bulbs.

PRO: Environmental Impact

The environmental impact of using rechargeable batteries is obvious: Fewer dead batteries means less waste in landfills. Many retail establishments also offer disposal programs for rechargeable batteries past their prime, so you know that the harmful chemicals these batteries contain are being handled in a more environmentally aware manner.

CON: Availability

While most large retail stores carry rechargeable batteries, you might be hard-pressed to find any at your favorite mom-and-pop bait shop. The lack of availability of rechargeable batteries can lead even the best-intentioned outdoor enthusiast back to the disposable variety.

Rechargeable batteries may sound like a pain to use, but with a little planning they can be an easy, more environmentally friendly power source for your outdoor-related gadgets.

Visit National Parks for Free April 17-25

With spring comes great weather, wonderful foliage and a chance to visit any national park in the country without paying admission.

April 17-25 is National Park Week, when all 392 national parks will offer free admission in an effort to get families and individuals back outside to enjoy the great outdoors. Many parks will also have family-friendly activities, including Wildflower Day at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky and the mysterious Ancient Petroglyph Walk at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in Hawaii.

Many park vendors and concessioners are also offering discounts on outdoor equipment and lodging, cutting prices on souvenirs and tours, and presenting coupons for nearby dining and shopping.

Some park fees may still apply, such as camping, group reservations and facilities provided by outside contractors. Check with your favorite national park for more details.

If you’ve got a ways to drive before you reach your destination, keep in mind a few handy travel tips. And whatever park you choose to visit, don’t rely on the rangers for safety; always bring along your wilderness survival kit.

Missing Hiker’s Body Found Near Base of Cliff

Searchers discovered the body of missing PSU student Katherine Huether more than a week after she set out for a hike in the Columbia River Gorge. She was found among the rocks near the base of an 800-foot-high rock face, where authorities believe she fell from a cliff.

In the days following her disappearance, helicopters and extensive search parties were sent to look for her, but officials called off the search after finding no trace of the hiker. James Martin of Stevenson, who decided to check the area below the cliff because he thought it hadn’t been searched thoroughly by ground rescuers, said he first spotted her blue jacket before his son noticed the body.

“Her clothing blended right in. I was standing 15 feet from her and didn’t recognize her,” Martin told the Oregonian.

Although Huether’s mother described her as an “avid hiker and experienced outdoorswoman,” the 24-year-old apparently fell victim to a steep, treacherous section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Her death illustrates the importance of safety precautions on the trail, even among seasoned hikers. To remain safe while hiking, follow these basic guidelines:

Always bring food, water and an LED flashlight or headlamp in case of unforeseen emergencies. It’s also a good idea to bring a first-aid kit, emergency blanket, whistle and pocket knife or multi-tool.
Never leave without telling someone your planned route as well as your estimated time of departure and return.
Never hike alone, no matter how experienced you are.

Missing PSU Student Remains Lost Near Pacific Crest Trail

The search for PSU student Katherine Huether continues today after she did not return from a hike last Thursday, March 4, 2010. Huether, 24 texted a friend letting them know that she was going on a short hike and would be home around 8:00pm that night. She has not yet returned.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office has expanded the search after few clues have been found. Her car was found at the Bonneville Dam trailhead and a credit card receipt with Huether’s name on it was found near Table Mountain. Neither have resulted in finding the lost hiker.

Missing Elk Hunter Teaches Lesson on Survival Skills

Jim Mahanna made it to within two miles of his home. And yet, if it wasn’t for search and rescue crews, he most likely would have died out in the woods. Mahanna set out to hunt elk on Friday, armed with his hunting gear, flashlight, and cell phone. Most of us would have considered him prepared. But disorientation and steep terrain caused him to get lost and forced him to spend a night in Tillamook County’s wilderness.

“He had fallen several times, knocked himself unconscious at one point and lost his flashlight and cell phone,” said Don Taylor, the county’s search and rescue coordinator. “He’s an experienced outdoorsman, but if we hadn’t come on when we did, I’m not sure he would have made it.” (Read full Oregonian news story.)

Although Mahanna was found roughly two miles from his home, he was in dire need of attention and care. This story shows once again that even the most prepared and knowledgeable hunters must do everything they can to protect themselves, including:

Having a well-stocked survival kit that you can carry easily.
Carrying flares or other device to mark where you are and get the attention of search and rescue.
Knowing your hunting destination and sticking to it – don’t wander off your intended route.
Carrying multiple light sources, if possible, such as a flashlight and a headlamp – see LED lights available at DLK.
Telling people where you are going and when you plan to return.

New Tonquin Trail in Tualatin and Sherwood Opening for Bikes and Hikes

Construction has begun in Oregon on a new pedestrian and bike trail that will connect the Willamette and Tualatin rivers and stretch 12 to 16 miles between Sherwood, Tualatin, and Wilsonville.

The new Tonquin Trail, funded in part by federal and state transportation grants and lottery funds, will cost an estimated $9.5 million to build and should take a few years to complete. The trail will open up pedestrian and bike access in Washington and Clackamas counties and, some hope, will encourage more people to use alternative methods of transportation. The Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition has put its two cents in, stating that the new trail will hopefully be used for much more than just recreation.

Thinking about getting out on the new trail when it’s complete? Make sure you have proper hiking equipment and dress appropriately for the weather. While the new trail will be paved and will run through populated areas, overexertion and dehydration are common problems wherever you hike or bike.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, and stop to rest at the scenic views along the new Tonquin Trail whenever you get tired. If you take the trail in the evening, bring a flashlight. LED flashlights are durable and have long battery lives, making them perfect for hiking your favorite new trail.

Trail Maintenance | Help The Community, Enjoy Yourself

All year long, outdoor enthusiasts have enjoyed the use of hiking trails to help them connect with nature. Now, nature itself is in need of a little help. Over time, many trails have become muddy, obstructed, or overgrown, and they now require some TLC.

Whether the holidays have put you in a giving mood or your New Year’s resolution includes helping the community, trail maintenance is a great way for even the most casual outdoor enthusiast to give something back. One way to get involved is to join a volunteer work party.

The Washington Trails Association is looking for volunteers to help maintain hiking trails during several work parties throughout December and January. The goal is to repair tread and improve drainage in certain county, state, and federal parks across Washington. No experience is necessary, as training and tools are provided.

Work parties typically last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To volunteer for a particular date or location, you’ll need to sign up via the WTA website at least 48 hours in advance. If you do join a work party, make sure you show up prepared with the proper attire:

Long pants to protect your legs from brush and swinging tools.
A long-sleeve shirt for arm protection.
Sturdy boots, such as hiking boots or, preferably, work boots. Tennis shoes don’t offer adequate protection from a dropped rock or heavy tool.
Gloves to prevent pinched fingers and blistered palms.
As always when you’re out in the woods, it never hurts to have a good multi-tool on hand, such as the C2795 10 Function Micro Multi-Tool.

Hiking This Thanksgiving? Be Prepared Using This Easy Survival Kit Guide

Hikers – new and experienced – always need to be prepared. The notion of being prepared is the slogan for many outdoor groups for a good reason: it helps save lives. If one is new to trekking the great outdoors, there are some basic principles to help one be prepared:

Preparing for a hike does not only mean packing enough granola bars and water, it also means planning on survival. This means knowing where you are going and your route, someone else knows where you will be and when you should be home, knowing the weather forecasted, having a cell phone and/or a personal locator beacon (to use only in emergency situations), being up to date with all your shots, and a survival kit.
Survival kits should be:

Small enough to carry
Water-proof
Sturdy
Versatile enough to have different-sized items

Survival kits should contain at least:

First aid items: bandages, gauze, surgical tape, wet naps, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, safety pins, tweezers, surgical blade, butterfly sutures, etc.
Shelter items and a foil/solar blanket
Water-purifying tablets
Things to light a fire: matches (waterproof) and/or a lighter
Signaling items like a mirror, whistle, flare, etc.
Food and food procurement items: snare wire, fish and snare line, bouillon cubes, etc.
Compass
Candle
Anti-diarrhea and anti-infection medications
Lip balm
Knife
Multi-tool
Pencil and paper: if you veer from your original route, let rescuers know where you have gone or can be found.
A list of important phone numbers in case you are lucky enough to have cell service.
Orange flag tape
Nylon cord
Bandana
Duct tape
LED flashlight
Sun block
Plastic zipper bags to help keep items dry or to hold water

A prepared hiker is a surviving hiker that is not featured on the evening news about how things should have been done. Planning ahead is the most invaluable strategy any outdoor enthusiast can have.

Winter Survival Tips: Cold Hiking Conditions

With so many months out of a year being cold and downright frosty, some outdoor enthusiasts cannot help but take a nice winter hike. However, the unexpected can always happen to even the most expert-level hiker. Whether one is making the trek in the cold wilderness for the first time or the thousandth, the following tips should never be overlooked:

Know where you are going and what you are doing. What is the geography and environment like? Make plans according to the terrain, weather and equipment. Plan your route and make sure someone back home what these plans are.
Maximize your warmth. Keep your head covered at all times as not doing so can make you lose 40-45% of your body heat. Keep your neck, wrists, and ankles covered as well.
Other tips top keep warm, which were adapted from the U.S. Army Survival Manual include:
** Keep your clothes clean
** Do not get overheated
** Layer your clothing and wear them loosely
** Keep your clothes dry
Don’t panic.
Always think ahead: set up camp early; make sure you have enough firewood. Thinking ahead about little things like this can help things seem a little easier.
Do not travel in a blizzard or whiteout conditions: it is hard to judge the terrain in these conditions.
Be careful when crossing ice: lay flat and crawl across instead of walking.
Do not travel in deep snow if possible. If one does have to travel in deep snow, do not travel over bodies of water that are snow-covered or in areas that look prone to avalanches.
Do not give up hope.

Surviving in the cold is one of the harder things stranded hikers have ever had to endure. The cold can weaken a person’s ability to think clearly, numbs the body, and is very unpredictable. Using all of the tips you have learned about hiking safety and adapting them to cold weather conditions can be the difference between life and death.

Get In Your Fall Camping Vacation

It’s nearing that time of year where light jackets are traded in for wool coats and backyard parties are moved indoors. For many hikers and campers, the next few weeks also mark the end of great Fall camping weather. When the rain starts to increase and the temperatures drop below freezing in parts of the country, campers must transition to their winter camping gear or call it a year and wait for spring. So consider this your reminder to use the next couple of weekends to check out the fall colors, get some end of season fresh air and enjoy a fall camping trip. Just do so responsibly:

Consider the light: The end of daylight savings means shorter days. Make sure you return from day hikes with plenty of daylight left to start a campfire or set-up camp. Bring a good light source like an LED lantern (we like the Coast LED Lenser TT7105) that has a long battery life and bright light.
Remember the cool nights: The weather may be mild during the day but the fall nights can get cold. Bring warm clothes to sleep in and consider a warmer sleeping bag.
Be Prepared for the Unexpected: The fall weather can be unpredictable at times. Make sure to have water-proof gear where possible and pack plenty of extra provisions in your survival kit in case the weather traps you.

Coyote Attack Reminder To Be A Prepared Hiker

A Canadian woman, identified as Taylor Mitchell, was attacked by coyotes last week while hiking the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. The 19 year old singer/songwriter from Toronto was hiking alone when she was attacked. Nearby hikers heard her screams and called police for help. The police arrived in time to shoot and wound one of the coyotes but both got away. Mitchell was taken to Halifax hospital but died later of her injuries.

Coyote attacks are extremely rare, but not unheard of. Experts suspect that the coyotes mistook Taylor for a deer or other prey. Any hiker should be aware if they plan to be hiking in places with a coyote population and take the appropriate precautions. Below are some suggestions to keep yourself safe.

1. Avoid hiking between dusk and dawn as this is when coyotes are the most active.
2. Bring along a hiking survival kit that includes pepper spray or a pocket knife (check out the Coast Colt folding knife) to protect yourself.
3. If camping, don’t leave food or water out which may attract coyotes to come closer.
4. Aggressive coyotes are usually trying to protect their prey or family. Try to scare the coyote by yelling and waving your arms. Throw rocks, sticks or other objects.
5. Do not turn away and run if encountering a coyote

Sign-Up for A Fall Hiking Trip in the Northwest

Head the Trail Signs: A Cautionary Story from the Gorge

The news reported on another tragic hiking accident. Typically we hear about falls along the Oregon and Washington trails during the Spring and Fall when new rain causes the ground to become slippery and unstable, as well as when visibility can become poor quickly. It is always unfortunate when we get word of someone who died while hiking when conditions are relatively good.

A yet unidentified man in his forties was hiking on Tuesday at Latourell Falls in the Columbia River Gorge when he fell nearly 250 feet and died. The man is believed to have been hiking alone when he crossed the barriers and walked 20 or more feet to the edge of the falls.

Even if everything seems safe, please understand fellow hikers, that those barriers have been placed on the trail for a reason. They are there to protect you, not to deter you from having fun. The professionals who work to make those parks safe understand the terrain and potential dangers in those areas.

Read the signs. Obey the signs. Have fun.

Get the Kids Outside: Family Nature Walk – Oak Island, Oregon

Doctors and advocates have been telling us for the last couple of years that our kids are getting less active, more obese and less motivated. They are siting everything from video games to more working parents as the cause. Though we really can’t blame any one factor, it is important we do what we can, when we can to get the kids outside and interacting with nature. The fresh air and stimulation will do them good, even if it is only for a couple of hours. Here’s one option for this weekend…

Hike Sauvie Island this weekend with the kids! The Sierra Club Oregon Chapter is offering a two mile loop hike through white oak woodlands, grassy meadows and the shores of Sturgeon Lake this Saturday, June 20 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. Families can bring their binoculars, good walking shoes and water for this great walking excursion along the peninsula. Search & Rescue Finds Lost Hikers Near Salmon River

Two hikers in their 50s lost near the Salmon River were found by two younger hikers on Wednesday, May 28, 2009. The lost hikers were disoriented but uninjured after being out in the woods without food for two days. The one of the two young hikers who found the middle-aged couple went to the Zigzag Ranger Station to call search and rescue. So far not much else is know about how the couple got lost.

1. First, thank you thank you to the thoughtful hikers who found the couple and took the correct action to get them rescued.
2. Second, thank you thank you to the Search & Rescue response crew that safely got the couple back to safety
3. Third, hikers – BE PREPARED! Know where you are hiking. Bring the appropriate survival equipment and tell people where you are going and when you plan to return so that someone will come looking for you.

Pack It In, Pack It Out: Growing Trend in Outdoor Garbage Disposal

A recent article in the paper on Seattle’s move away from trash cans caught my attention not because I necessarily thought it unusual, but mostly because I hoped it would actually work. The Seattle Parks Department is removing garbage cans to trim the budget for garbage collection throughout the city. The city hopes that the removal of the trash cans will prompt park visitors to take their trash home when they leave (as opposed to force people to throw their litter in the streets). For me, it seems that removing more than 750 trash cans from locations around the city could deter people from using the picnic and BBQ areas created for city residents. I guess I don’t have a lot of confidence that people will bring their own trash bags to haul their lunch items away everyday.

Either way, it is a growing trend, not only in city parks but in state camping and recreation areas. Campers and hikers this summer are being asked to carry out what they pack in, in order to keep the parks environmentally healthy and safe. They also want to reduce the cost of having parks and rec clean up if it is not necessary. Consider this when you start packing for your next camping trip. Bring items that can be easily packed out and consider a couple of different garbage options now available for campers.

Hiker, 90, survives Columbia River Gorge Fall

Chalk this up in the miracle column. Carroll Dubuar, a 90 year old man from Portland, survived a 60 foot fall down an embankment in the Columbia River Gorge this Wednesday. The Sheriff’s department stated that Dubuar lost his footing while hiking around Elowah Falls with his friends. Rescue crews had to use ropes to get to Dubuar who was taken to the hospital but who was expected to be fine. He was an avid hiker who has been hitting the trails with his friends for 30 years.

It is an incredible testament to Dubuar and his love for the Oregon hiking that he was out enjoying the Gorge at his age. It is also a testament to how even the experts can get into bad situations.

Earth Day Volunteering: Pacific Crest Trail Clean-Up

DLK blog readers know that we are big fans of the Pacific Crest Trail (see Pacific Crest Trail | Not to Be Forgotten and Oregon: Best Trails for Hiking). This amazing trailway winds up the coast from Mexico all the way to Canada, giving hikers a variety of terrains, difficulties and views. The trail is accessible from nearly every major city up the coast, making it a great and inexpensive place to explore on a spring Saturday or as a week-long summer vacation.

As Earth Day passes and we all take a look at the things we can do to make the world a better and more environmentally friendly place, the Pacific Crest Trail Association asks that those that love the trail volunteer their time to help keep it clean and clear, particularly the path from northern Oregon to southern Washington. Volunteers can give some of their time any time between now and October. This is a great way for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to give back to the beautiful mountains and forests that have done given so much to them.

Coastal Living’s Top 5 Wildflower Hikes

The April edition of Coastal Living Magazine includes its recommendations for hikes along the pacific northwest coast that deliver the best wildflower viewing during the Spring and Summer. If you are looking for a pleasant way to spend a Saturday, check out these trails in Washington, California and Alaska.

5. Anacapa Island, CA

These hikes are not considered extreme. However, many due offer camping in the area and overnight hikes.

Spring Break Cheap Activities: Hiking Around Portland

Many families are looking for inexpensive ways to get out this Spring Break. So many homes have had to tighten their budgets which means cutting out an expensive trip to southern California or a state amusement park. Just because money is tight doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun and memory making spring break adventures. You just have to think about interesting things to do closer to home. Many are touring their local zoos or visiting children theaters this spring break to save money on travel. Those with more energy may want to consider taking the family on a hike at one of the closer in parks.

In Portland, Oregon, hiking is a common past time that doesn’t require a drive up the gorge or to the beach. Vi Ho at the Oregonian recently recommended some great hiking destinations that are close to you and that offer a fun afternoon with the kids.

Forest Park: The 70 miles of trails in Forest Park offer a great opportunity to get some fresh hair and enjoy a great hiking adventure in the Spring forest.

Powell Butte: The butte is the second largest park in Portland with 9 miles of hiking and biking trails. The lower portion of these trails are paved, great for older relatives or younger walkers.

Angels Rest: Just 30 miles out of downtown Portland, Angels Rest offers beautiful views of the Columbia Gorge.

So take a look at your schedule this Spring Break weekend and consider taking the family on a nature walk or a full-blown hike in one of the area’s best close-in parks.

Oregon Hiker Falls To Her Death At Eagle Creek Trail

KGW News has just reported that 23-year old Rhonda Casto fell down a 100 foot embankment at Eagle River Trail and died on Monday evening. Casto, who was from Portland, was hiking in the trail located west of Cascade Locks with another man when she is believed to have slipped on the wet trailway that had recently had sleet and hail activity. Police are still investigating the incident. I’ll let readers know more when it comes available.

This is the second person who has died on the trail in the last 30 days. Consider hiking another trail this weekend until the weather improves the conditions on the Eagle River Trail. We don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.

Winter Backpacking Tips and Safety

There’s still time for some epic backpacking in the pristine mountains of the Northwest. This activity may not seem immediately appealing, but once you’re out there on a snow covered trail, the worries of the “real world” begin to disappear. It’s hard not to feel a sense of peace and clarity while trekking through a blanketed meadow sparkling with ice-crystals. The views are even more majestic as an evening sunset leaves an array of pastel colors that fill the dome view overhead. Setting up camp is the fun part as the duo or group gathers around the fire. Yes, one appreciates a good warm fire on these excursions, and just wait till your buddy busts out a hunk of salami and cheese he waited to share until the evening feast.

Winter backpacking gear is available at most outdoor sports shops. You’ll need the best when it comes to lighting and camping gear. LED headlamps will serve you well for setting up camp and trekking in the dark. The Coast LED Lenser LL7451 Micro Headlamp features a blue LED light that adds to safety by sustaining visibility in the dark.

Basic Winter Backpacking Safety begins with these few tips…

1. For safety, solo hiking in winter is just not wise.

2. Plan to start your day early since daylight hours are in short supply. Having a headlamp is key for getting to your destination and setting up camp after dark. Also, Lithium batteries are more reliable in cold weather than alkaline ones.

3. Make sure a friend at home has your travel plans on hand in case of a late return.

4. Bring a topographical map and know how to read it. Snow can hide trail markers and landmarks. Also carry a compass and don’t just rely on a GPS.

5. Pack the necessary layers that will keep you warm, but carry only the essentials.

6. Be avalanche aware and savvy. If you’ll be hiking in potential avalanche terrain, first, reconsider your plan and two, make sure you take a class in preparation. Never go out unaware of the snow dynamics around you.

Oregon Hiking Guide – 5 Ideas

I rarely comment on another organization’s article but every once in a while I run into a pretty good one from an expert that I feel compelled to share with you readers.

ABC of Hiking had a really helpful article this month titled “5 Ways to Enjoy the Hiking Trails in Oregon.” The author gives some great things to think about when it comes to choosing your hiking location. Oregon offers such diverse options when it comes to hiking – from deserts to coastal to the woods – there is something for anyone interested in spending a vacation appreciating what Oregon has to offer.

Snow and Rain Shouldn’t Stop NW Hikers but Should Make Them Cautious

Portland, Oregon parks are open for business says Parks and Recreation. Though many around the NW may be holding off on any outdoor adventure for fear of bad terrain, ruined pathways or deep snow packs, the state assures outdoorsmen and women that they are ready for whomever is looking to stretch their legs this winter.

What I have to say about this pronouncement is this: while the Portland Bureau of Parks and Recreation wants you to get out and use the great hiking areas Oregon has to offer, make sure to do your research. In the same breath as the Bureau’s spokesperson says come out and hike, they also give a long list of closed or partially closed parks most often frequented by the most adventurous.

The following parks are closed or have limited access:
1. Banks-Vernonia State Trail: Hazardous conditions due to snow and fallen trees
2. McIver STate Park: Open but some trails are closed due to damages
3. Stub Stewart State Park: Downed trees and snow have many trailways blocked; camping is closed
4. Government Island North Boat Ramp: Closed due to broken docks
5. Sarah Helmick State Recreation Site: Closed due to flooding
6. Silver Falls State Park: North Falls day-use area, Canyon Trail and Maple Ridge Trail are all closed

So, if you don’t see your favorite Portland hiking trail here, first take a look online or call Parks and Recreation to find out about any possible issues with the area and then head out and enjoy the winter weather and all that the Oregon wilderness has to offer.

Cabin Fever? Check Out Ranger Guided Walks

Most of the U.S. has been cooped up in their homes for a week or more due to the extreme weather conditions that hit the U.S. prior to the Christmas and Hanukkah holiday. That stir-crazy feeling may need some extra help in order to go away. This time of year, it may be difficult to ride your bike or go on your regular power walks if streets and sidewalks are still being cleaned up. If this is the case, consider scheduling a guided walk in one of your local state parks to help get you out of the house, out of the city and into a better head-space for the coming year. Guided walking tours are great for any level of hiker. They can teach individuals about proper survival skills and basic camping and hiking courtesy. They also typically provide education about your state forests, giving your brain some needed exercise as well. Winter Hiking Safety

The Oregonian on Sunday had a great article by John D. Carr on Winter Hiking opportunities here in the Northwest. The recent snow storm may have deterred many from heading up the mountains for an afternoon of snow hiking for a little while but I suspect not for long. Oregon’s forests turn into winter wonderlands when the snow and ice blanket them during the winter. They are beautiful sites to behold so long as you take precautions when heading up to see them. Take head to the advice below, compiled from the Oregonian article and previous research in this blog, when taking a winter hike.

1. Let other people know where you are going and when you plan to return
2. Pay attention to weather conditions both before you hike and while hiking. If things start to turn sour, head back before you lose daylight.
3. Know the area – keep a map or GPS with you. As we mentioned in a previous post, snowy conditions can quickly eliminate the pathway or markers you use while hiking
4. Pack and dress appropriately, with layers of clothes in case the weather gets worse and extra food in case you get trapped or lost. Even for a day trip, a survival kit should be packed and carried in case of emergencies.
