What’s causing it? Is it a sign of a larger problem? The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says probably not.

According to a WDFW press release, the cause of the carp die-off is still unknown, but it may be a natural occurrence. The fish carcasses are expected to decompose completely within a few weeks, and although people should take basic hygiene precautions, there’s nothing to suggest that this is a human health emergency.

The WDFW may not know the cause of the die-off, but they do know what isn’t causing it. The Washington Department of Ecology has ruled out both toxic substances in the water and low levels of oxygen as potential causes. DOE expert Mike Hepp explains: “All the species of fish in Lake Spokane would have been affected if there were toxic pollutants,” he said. “In addition, we would see small fish dying as well as larger fish, and that’s not the case here.”

So what is causing the die-off? According to WDFW district fish biologist Chris Donley, it may be a combination of spawning patterns and unusual temperature fluctuations.

“Since all the dead carp appear to be adult fish, it’s highly possible they came near shore to spawn when it was cool a few weeks ago, waited around for the warmer water temperatures they prefer, then were stressed with very elevated water temperatures very quickly, and became susceptible to natural pathogens like bacteria or viruses,” Donley said. “Things like this happen more often than most people realize, usually with fish carcasses either sinking to lake bottoms or decomposing in remote areas where no one sees them.”

One thing’s for sure: Local anglers should avoid Long Lake until the problem has been resolved, and Long Lake homeowners are encouraged to safely and hygienically bury any carcasses they find.

And your hull. And your trailer.

According to a recent WDFW press release, officers this summer will be conducting mandatory checks of boats, trailers and fishing gear for invasive aquatic species – specifically, zebra mussels and quagga mussels. These non-native species pose a major threat to native fish and wildlife, and the WDFW wants boaters to be aware of the ecological ramifications of their presence. Here are some specifics:

What are the invasive species?

The species that the WDFW is targeting most aggressively are zebra mussels and quagga mussels. These species are native to the Caspian Sea, were introduced to the Great Lakes in the 1980s and have since spread to over 20 states. These non-native nuisances multiply quickly and consume food supplies needed by local fish and wildlife to survive. They can even clog water intake systems at power plants and public water suppliers. Yikes!

How can I prevent their spread?

Boaters are legally responsible for making sure there aren’t any non-native species hitching a ride on their boats, trailers or fishing equipment. The easiest way of preventing their spread is to carefully inspect and clean your boat, trailer or gear before and after you use it. Clean off mud and debris and drain any standing water in your boat.

What if I don’t?

Spreading invasive species carries series repercussions. Unknowingly importing a non-native species is a misdemeanor and can lead to up to $5,000 in fines and up to a year in jail. Knowingly importing them is a felony and can lead to much harsher punishments.

While this weather may be preventing you from airing out your camping gear, hiking or otherwise recreating outdoors, a cool and wet spring will actually turn out well for hunters and anglers later in the year. Here’s why:

More water = more fish

Many of the lakes and reservoirs in the Pacific Northwest run dry in late summer, especially in desert-climate locations such as Eastern Oregon. With late spring rain – and lots of it – it’s less likely that these lakes and reservoirs will dry up. The longer there is water in the lakes and reservoirs, the longer trout and steelhead can survive, meaning Northwest anglers will have more chances to exercise their fishing equipment. Late spring rain is also good for local fisheries.

More water = more vegetation = more game

FACT: Late spring rains and a relatively warm summer encourage plant growth. What does that mean to you, the avid Pacific Northwest hunter? Why, more late-season game, of course! While the spring bear and turkey hunting seasons were adversely affected by the weather, the elk and deer seasons are looking good. And despite some flood-related losses in Northeastern Oregon, the duck population responded very well to the wet past few months.

More water = fewer forest fires

Unseasonably wet weather is Mother Nature’s ultimate defense against summer wildfires. While there is no definite way to say how the rain will affect forest fires in the area, it’s a safe assumption that the added moisture will do more good than harm.

One of the biggest threats to our forests is manmade lead items. Lead has no biologically beneficial role, yet it is often used in ammunition for upland hunting, line sinkers and other forms of fishing gear. Wildlife will often ingest spent lead shot and bullets, hooks and sinkers, which causes them to suffer negative behavioral, physiological and biochemical effects. In many cases, lead poisoning will lead to death.

Even animals that don’t ingest lead themselves can be exposed to it if lead products have dissolved and entered the groundwater. Here’s what you can do:

  • Make sure the hunting equipment and fishing gear you are using is lead-free. Metals such as tin are much safer than lead and are readily available. Some companies even offer biodegradable fishing equipment.
  • Safely remove any discarded metal items you find while hunting or fishing. Old bullet casings or sinkers can harm wildlife, even if an animal doesn’t ingest it.
  • Educate others about the dangers of lead. The more people know how dangerous it can be to wildlife and plant life, the less likely they will be to use lead-based products.

Found mostly in the southern part of the state, orca populations have dwindled over the years due to declining salmon populations, an increase of pollutants in the water, and disruptions from passing boats. In fact, the orca is recognized by both the federal government and the State of Washington as “endangered.” The current southern orca population consists of about 90 whales.

So why the reminder? Aren’t passing boats the least of the orca’s worries? According to WDFW deputy chief of enforcement Mike Cenci, not exactly.

“Human disturbances, including boat traffic, can interfere with their ability to feed, communicate with one another and care for their young,” Cenci said in a press release. “Boaters have a responsibility to keep their distance.”

In case a friendly reminder isn’t enough to warrant caution, remember that violating the state law can result in a fine of up to $1,025. For breaking the federal law, the fine is up to $10,000. Specifically, here is what the state law says you can’t do to or around a southern resident whale:

  • Approach within 100 yards.
  • Cause a vessel or other object to approach within 100 yards.
  • Fail to disengage the transmission of a vessel within 100 yards.
  • Intercept by remaining in its path until it comes within 100 yards.
  • Feed it.

According to Rogue District Fish Biologist Dan Van Dyke, the high numbers of returning wild chinook can be credited to greatly improved ocean conditions as well as harvest restrictions on the fish.

“It’s a great year to fish the Rogue for spring chinook,” Van Dyke said in a recent ODFW press release. “With these high numbers, we feel confident adding back some additional harvest opportunity on the mid-run wild spring chinook.”

The high numbers Van Dyke refers to are the 24,000 wild chinook projected to return this year. This number is based on fish counts running through May 9.

Because of the increased numbers of returning chinook, the Rogue River from the mouth upstream to the Gold Ray Dam opened May 22, about ten days earlier than usual. Biologists say there are good chinook returns to Cole Rivers Hatchery and the count of wild springers over Gold Ray Dam is up.

Since 2001, an unnatural and illegal infusion of goldfish has plagued Mann Lake in Southeastern Oregon. Thought to have been introduced as live bait, the goldfish now outnumber and threaten the once thriving native population of Lahontan trout. The plan to get rid of these glimmering pests? Why, poison, of course!

This August, Mann Lake will be treated with rotenone, a plant-based poison that will kill all the fish in the lake by preventing the use of oxygen transferred to the fish’s blood through the gills. The poison has been used for similar purposes before, most recently at Diamond Lake. Once the fish have been terminated and removed, the ODFW will restock the lake with its native Lahontan cutthroat trout.

While some may think that killing every fish in an entire lake is a bit extreme, biologists and fishing enthusiasts alike agree that it is a necessary action. Non-native plants and animals can quickly destroy whole populations of native ones, and while an entire lake filled with goldfish may sound pretty, the environmental costs of losing an entire fishery are too high.

The opening was prompted by an abundance of hatchery-origin Chinook salmon expected to return to the upper Snake River area this year. The 15,000 salmon are more than enough for the hatchery’s needs, so the ODFW, along with the Idaho Fish and Game fishery managers, are making the rest available for Northwest anglers.

There are a few limits to Chinook fishing on the upper Snake River. The daily bag limit for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon is four, and only two of those salmon can be adults longer than 24 inches. To put it in layman’s terms, you can keep either four young salmon or two adult salmon. Once you reach those limits, you’re done for the day.

The upper Snake River opening is only temporary, so make sure you get a chance to go out and take advantage of the opportunity. The fishery will announce when it plans on closing, which ODFW officials say probably won’t be for at least a few months.

  • Make sure your child is dressed warmly so he or she won’t be distracted by the cold.
  • Try to ensure your child catches something, regardless of what type of fish it is.
  • Bring along some form of entertainment in case the fish aren’t biting.

    With my grandpa, I learned by watching his amazing ability to sit still along the lake and watch the bugs dance along the water, a sign that fish would be jumping soon was a tranquil. From my dad, I learned that not every cast is perfect and sometimes you spend more time rebaiting your hook or untangling your line then actually fishing and yet there is fun (and a need for patience) in that too.

    1. In the day time, the color of an artificial fly is what catches fish attention. In the evening, size and share will attract the fish more.

    2. Don’t think that a rainy summer day will keep you inside. Damp weather is an optimal time for insects to hatch which can help your fishing.

    3. Observe the bugs that linger over the water as well as the birds. They are a good sign that the fish will jump at your fly as well.

    4. Use fluorocarbon leaders and tippets for sub-surface fly-fishing and nylon floats for dry fly-fishing

    Speculators consider the uptake in fishing license sales an indication of the growing number of out-of-work men and women with more time on their hands. That very well may be so. Fishing can be an inexpensive and relaxing past time for those dealing with the stress of not having a source of income.

The sentiment is ringing true all over the U.S. Though the economy has many pinching pennies and re-evaluating priorities, it has not stopped people entirely from enjoying the things they love most. Rather, they are simply recreating their favorite past times to fit their budget. Some of those “tweeks” include:

    1. Stay Close In: Many anglers and hunters are moving to rivers and mountain areas closer to home to save money on gas and overnight supplies.
    2. Shorten Your Excursion: Choosing to take 3 or 4 day trips rather than two weeks to go hunting is saving a lot of outdoors people added cost of supplies.
    3. Make Changes Elsewhere: The true blue outdoorsmen and women don’t let the economy stop them from doing what they love. Knowing they will be spending money fishing or hunting, many are simply evaluating other parts of their life to find places to cut back. Squid fishermen, especially, are hurting from high fuel prices, due to their technique, which involves blasting oil-powered halide lamps lights resembling those used in baseball stadiums to attract squid from their natural habitat 200 feet below the surface. Japan’s squid fishermen have already staged several strikes asking for subsidies from the Japanese government, which has promised $95 million in aid to the fisheries industry.

    A professor at Kawaga University may have a lifeline for the struggling squid industry. Professor Kensho Okamoto is outfitting test boats with LED panels, which operate on roughly three percent of the energy required by their halide counterparts. At $50,000 to $100,000 per boat, cost is a major obstacle for forward-thinking squid fishermen. Additionally, because the LED panels aren’t as bright as their predecessors, they don’t attract as many squid. So far, only a few test boats have been outfitted with the LED panels.

Only problem is, who wants to sit in a boat when it’s hot enough to fry a trout on the car hood?

    If summertime heat has kept you from fishing this year, consider going nocturnal: go bass fishing. Fish before sunrise and after sunset, and you may find yourself enjoying yourself more and getting more bites to boot. Here are a few tips from the Yuma Sun for how to have a successful nighttime bass fishing trip:

    • Bring along mosquito repellent with DEET.
    • Carry plenty of water.
    • Use a plastic worm in dark colors, which are more visible to bass that linger in the shade of overhanging trees.
    • Alternatively, some fishermen and -women prefer plastic worms in light watermelon or amber shades, or neon colors like bubblegum and hot orange. Experiment to find your personal preference.
    • Cast five or six feet past the spot where you suspect bass are hiding. Then, twitch the lure just out of the strike zone. Avoid slow retrieval of your line, which allows more time for the bass to examine your lure.
    • As for your clothing, avoid bright colors. You may consider obtaining yellow-tinted sunglasses, which make bass more visible.
    • Minimize noise– even a trolling motor can scare off fish.

    As The Vanguard reports, fisheries in Southwestern Nova Scotia recently asked the provincial government to conduct a study on their industry’s rising costs, in order to gather documentation should the government need to provide assistance. One local herring processor as seen the cost of shipping jump 40%, while packaging costs have risen 18%.

    Recreational fishermen are concerned as well, and may be hoping to stretch a tank of gas by fishing close to home. The Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune reports that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has anticipated this trend by setting up a website called Fishing in the Neighborhood to educate Twin City residents about well stocked lakes in the metropolitan area.

    Perhaps this year you’ll choose to save a little gas by spending the first good weekend at home, watching fishing clips online at MyOutdoorTV and perfecting your tackle box supply.
