I remember my first camera phone. I felt so incredibly hip. It was a little Nokia flip phone and I spent the next three weeks taking what I thought were interesting, moving amateur photos of plants, people in the park and my cat.  I never made it as a photographer but I still enjoy having a camera element in my phone. I found out the other day that it is very possible that the flash ability built into my phone was provided by Philiips Lumileds.

Philips Lumileds has announced that they have shipped more than 100 million units of its Luxeon Flash power LEDs to camera phone manufacturers worldwide. Lumileds started shipping flash LED for phones about three years ago.

These Luxeon Flash LEDs are the powerful light source for 2 megapixel and higher camera phones. The flash LED is also used in the video and flashlight functions being added to newer model phones.  These LEDs allow camera phone users to take quality pictures indoors or in darker environments. Luxeon also claims that their flash power LED gives the perfect light needed for photos and video without depleting your phone’s battery life.

Mobile phones are a hot application for the latest and greatest technologies and apparently LED lighting technology is no exception.
